Charter Communications announced Wednesday that it has signed a long-term deal to license Microsoft TV's interactive television software.

While the financial terms were not disclosed, the companies said it was a seven-year deal and that Microsoft TV's software would be used for 1 million Charter customers. Those customers will be able to access e-mail, Internet browsing, and local and national news services.

Atheros Communications Inc.'s plans to announce that its 5-GHz wireless LAN chip has received the coveted Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certification from Microsoft Corp. is mired in uncertainty. Microsoft apparently will only grant the certification to devices that also support 802.11b (2.45-GHz) WLANs, and Atheros' device is a 5-GHz-only product.
