As an anti-piracy measure, Microsoft has quietly implemented a policy through which hardware manufacturers who license Windows directly from Microsoft no longer ship a full backup CD of the OS with their systems. Instead, buyers receive two options for disaster recovery: a "recovery CD" locked into that type of system, or a hard-drive-based approach when a "recovery image" of the OS is loaded on a separate partition. Both approaches appear to have some serious shortcomings, not the least of which is that PC buyers might not realize what they´re getting until it´s too late.

Sporadic reports indicate that Microsoft´s recent upgrade to Microsoft Office 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1), is causing problems for some users. PowerQuest(R) Corp., a leader in hard drive and server management software, announces DriveCopy(TM) 3.0 with support for Windows 2000 Professional, Linux Ext2 file systems and Linux swap files. The new version also includes support for hard drives larger than the previous 8.4GB limit.
DriveCopy 3.0 allows users to easily upgrade their hard drives by copying an exact duplicate of their existing drive to a newly installed drive and setting the computer to boot from the new drive. The simple, three-step process migrates all data, operating systems, and partitions on the previous hard drive to the new one with minimal user intervention. It also allows the user to create extended partitions and hide or unhide specific partitions on the fly.

Under stress, Microsoft Exchange and other programs might stop working and generate Dr. Watson access violation error messages.
