If the product continues with this nicely timed schedule, the final "RTM" release will hit on June 13th as planned and Windows Me will begin appearing with new PCs and on retail store shelves in late July. In a note to beta testers, the company said that Windows Me RC1 would be the first of many release candidate builds that will appear over the next few weeks as the product inches closer to completion. And at this point in the Windows Me´s development, Microsoft is only looking for "show stopper" bugs and regressions from prior Windows releases.

Microsoft´s Windows 2000 was not responsible for a large drop in fiscal second-quarter revenues said Novell, the US software company, which had suggested it was the cause of a profit warning three weeks ago.

Some corporate information technology executives are grumbling that Microsoft Corp. has revamped its certification program to force companies to migrate to Windows 2000.

Under the new rules, people who hold Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification must pass exams on Windows 2000 by Dec. 31, 2001, or lose their certification.

What´s more, Microsoft is "retiring" all Windows NT 4.0 exams at the end of this year. This means that, seven months from now, it will be impossible to obtain MCSE certification without training on Windows 2000.

An Intel roadmap seen by The Register indicates that the Celeron processor will shuffle off its mortal coil towards the end of the first quarter next year, displaced by the system-on-the-chip solution codenamed Timna.

But there´s life in the old Celeron dog yet, according to the roadmap. As revealed here yesterday, the 633MHz and 666MHz Celerons will arrive at the end of the month, to be followed in Q3 by a 700MHz Celeron, and in Q4 by a 733MHz Cu128K.

Not long ago, building answer files was time consuming. You had to build a text file that specified all the correct configuration information, including the machine name, the IP address, and network card settings. To simplify the process, Microsoft included a utility called Setup Manager in the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit. The Win2K Advanced Server, Win2K Server, and Win2K Pro CD-ROMs include an improved version of this utility. You can find the utility in the SupportTools directory´s cabinet file deploy.cab. To use Setup Manager, extract setupmgr.exe and setupmgx.dll to a folder on your hard drive, and run setupmgr.exe to begin creating your answer files.

Microsoft is making it more challenging than ever for technology professionals to become Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers.

With many companies expected to adopt Windows 2000, and the need for more highly skilled workers to help them plan and manage that migration, Microsoft is raising the bar for MCSE candidates by revamping the tests required for its new MCSE Windows 2000 credential -- including rigorous testing for real-world skills. Not only must the next generation of MCSEs know how to design, develop and manage Windows 2000 applications and related Microsoft server products, they must also prove their skills and experience on new performance-based exams that test hands-on experience rather than rote memorization of facts.
