Iomega Unveils Two New ZipCD CD-RW Drives

Iomega Corporation today announced shipment of an internal 12x4x32x ZipCD(TM) ATAPI CD-RW drive, and also announced its intention to ship a 6x4x24x4x ZipCD(TM) ATAPI CD-RW/DVD Reader combination drive within Q3, 2000.

Both drives are compatible with Windows(R) 95/98/2000; the 12x4x32x drive is also compatible with Windows NT(R) 4.0 operating system. Additionally, both ship with Adaptec(R) Easy CD Creator(TM) and Adaptec DirectCD(TM) software.

Iomega´s new high-speed internal 12x4x32x ZipCD(TM) ATAPI drive is a powerful data management tool that can be used for countless applications, including the creation of personal digital photo albums, family history archives and customized audio CDs. The 12x4x32x ZipCD ATAPI drive also features innovative Burn-Proof(TM) technology, which greatly increases the ease-of-use of CD-RW drives. Burn-Proof(TM) is designed to reduce CD-R disc creation failure rates by giving the drive the ability to detect and remedy potential data transfer interruptions, essentially allowing the drive to work "smarter."

Iomega´s 6x4x24x4x ZipCD(TM) ATAPI CD-RW/DVD Reader allows users to create CDs and to access software titles, games and movies on DVD discs. In addition, both of Iomega´s new drives fit inside a desktop computer´s 5.25" drive bay, which saves the user valuable desk space.

"Iomega´s launch of two innovative optical products underlines our commitment to continually provide leading-edge technology to our customers," said Mark Lucas, executive vice president, global marketing and product management. "We will continue expanding our ZipCD product line to reflect customer demands."

The internal 12x4x32x ZipCD(TM) ATAPI drive is available at an estimated street price of $299.95 (U.S.). The estimated street price of the internal 6x4x24x4x ZipCD(TM) CD-RW/DVD Reader will be announced at the time of shipping.

The internal 12x4x32x drive is currently available, and the internal 6x4x24x4x drive will be available in Q3, 2000, directly from Iomega at www.iomegadirect.com or through major distributors and resellers.

IBM to demo Transmeta-based notebook at PC Expo

IBM said today that it plans to show off a ThinkPad notebook based on a processor from upstart Transmeta at a trade show later this month.

A spokeswoman for Big Blue said the laptop to be shown at PC Expo in New York is only a technology demonstration. IBM, she said, is considering offering Transmeta-based models later this year.

Detonator 2 fix

Saw here on the message board the follow posting:

Those of you out there who are experiencing crashes in Opengl games such as Soldier of Fortune (e.g. GLimp_EndFrame() - SwapBuffers() failed!) after installing the Detonator 2 drivers for Windows 2000 will need to fix it using this procedure.
1. Click, Start, Run.
2. Type in regedit & hit Enter.
3. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionOpenGLDrivers]. Delete the RIVATNT subkey.
4. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionOpenGLDrivers] & make a New String Value entitled RIVATNT & give it a value of nvoglnt.
Thanks to the nVidia newsgroup (unknown_error in particular) for mentioning the basic fix.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-037 announces the availability of a patch that eliminates a vulnerability in the HTML Help facility that ships as part of Microsoft:registered: Internet Explorer. Under certain conditions, the vulnerability could allow a malicious web site operator to run code on the computer of a visiting user.

What's the scope of the vulnerability?

This vulnerability could allow a malicious web site operator to cause code to execute on the computer of a user who visited the site. Such code could take any action that the user himself could take, including but not limited to creating, changing or deleting data, or communicating with an external web site.

In order to exploit this vulnerability, the malicious user would need to place an HTML help file in a location accessible to the visitor´s machine. Because of this, customers behind a properly-configured firewall would typically not be at risk. Even customers who are not behind a firewall would not be at risk, if they have used the Security Zones feature in Internet Explorer to disable Active Scripting for untrusted web sites.
