The Exchange 2000 line includes three servers: Exchange 2000 Enterprise, Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server. Each server will have its own licensing structure, but Exchange 2000 client access licenses (CAL) are good for access to all three.

Microsoft officials claim there will be only a small pricing change for existing Exchange customers, since more than half of them purchased Exchange CALs via an Enterprise Agreement, which allows free upgrades to Exchange 2000 CALs. Customers that are part of the Exchange or BackOffice CAL Upgrade Advantage program also will get a free CAL upgrade.

A computer virus that was dormant for nearly two weeks has awakened, hitting several corporate networks and sparking security experts this morning to upgrade warnings for the infection from "low" to "medium."

The so-called stages.worm virus has been found in email attachments in messages with the subject lines "Funny" and "Jokes." Like the "I Love You" and Melissa viruses, stages.worm replicates itself through IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channels and Microsoft´s Outlook Express email program.

A wait-and-see approach to Windows 2000 is holding businesses back from buying PCs, according to a recent report.

CPU shortages are also expected to hold back the PC market. But the IDC report added that a more positive attitude to Windows 2000 would stimulate business demand during the second half of the year.

Microsoft said it acquired Bungie Software Products to bolster its development of games for personal computers and its planned X-Box video-game console.

Terms weren´t disclosed. Closely held Bungie makes games such as "Myth" and "Marathon." The Chicago-based game maker and almost all of its 50 employees will join Microsoft as a separate development studio within the Microsoft games division.

Microsoft has announced a radical change to its licensing model by switching from per-user to per-processor pricing for its next generation of server applications.

The Redmond giant said it has chosen a processor-based licensing model for Windows DNA (Distributed iNternet Architecture) 2000 servers to "alleviate the complexity and inconsistency of the current licensing models".
