In late June, Microsoft will ship Windows 2000 Datacenter Edition, supporting up to 32 processors and 64 GB of memory, making it Microsoft´s most powerful Windows server yet.

Datacenter Edition, which has mainframe-like reliability and manageability features, will likely steal market share from Unix and proprietary servers such as the AS/400, IT executives and analysts said, though no one anticipates that will happen overnight.

ComputerJobs.com is betting the farm -- or more specifically, the server farm -- on it. The Web-based recruitment agency for IT specialists has moved its site almost entirely to Windows 2000, deploying the operating system on 30 Web servers on Feb. 14 -- the first week the OS was commercially available.

Prior to making the transition to Windows 2000, the five-year-old site ran on Windows NT 4 updated with Service Pack 5.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-008 announces the availability of a tool that eliminates vulnerabilities posed by several registry keys in Microsoft:registered: Windows NT:registered: 4.0. The default permissions on these keys could allow an unprivileged user to take unauthorized actions on a machine that he or she could interactively log onto.

Windows 2000 has helped ignite PC sales in Western Europe after a sluggish start to the year, according to researcher IDC.

The slowdown in PC buying around the Y2K date change continued into the first two months of this year, according to IDC´s latest quarterly PC shipment report.

However, IDC said that sales for March were beginning to show signs of improvement, mainly due to the launch on 17 February of Microsoft´s Windows 2000.

MAKING GOOD ON promises to cascade key proprietary hardware technologies down to its PC-based servers, IBM next week will roll out two 4-way SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) servers containing some features the company hopes will give the servers a strong performance advantage in running Windows 2000 Server.

The Netfinity 7600 and 7100 systems will feature chip-kill correction technology, reputed to be as much as 100 times more reliable than existing ECC (error-correcting code) memory. The systems also feature Active PCI, which allows the operating system to configure a network card automatically; a Power Fuel Gauge that alerts IT administrators when overall system resources are being overtaxed; and a dedicated services processor.
