Intel is about to introduce a new BIOS update process for its newer mobos which gets around the difficulty users of Windows 2000 and ME have in creating a bootable floppy.

With the new Express BIOS Update, users will be able to update the BIOS on an Intel mobo from within Windows. The utility is around 1MB in size and certainly sounds foolproof. Microsoft can be a patient company. It took more than seven years for people to take its Windows desktop operating system seriously from the launch of version 1.0 to the release of version 3.0.

And last Thursday, the Redmond giant previewed its planned transition from a Windows-centric world to what it used to describe as Next Generation Windows Services and now calls .Net - a platform that will both provide subscription-based software services to users over the internet and deliver a programming infrastructure to developers.

Intel will call Willamette, its next-generation processor, the Pentium 4.

Willamette, or Pentium 4, is the chip that will succeed the Pentium III. The chip in many ways will be a landmark release for the chipmaker. For one thing, Willamette, and a related chip for servers code-named "Foster," will feature an entirely new architecture, which will give the company room to innovate or tap new features.

For more than five years, new Intel microprocessors have all relied on the same basic architecture. The Pentium Pro, which came out in October 1995, effectively features the same "P6" design as the Pentium II, the Celeron, Xeon processors and the Pentium III.

Microsoft says that by Friday it expects to have shipped out more than 3 million copies of its most crucial new product: the Windows 2000 operating system for businesses.

The company said Windows 2000 sales remain strong as computer makers ship PCs and servers, which run Internet sites and corporate networks, with the software installed. Yet analysts have said sales of Windows 2000 for servers, released in February, are slower than they expected.

According to a Web audience analysis firm, use of Microsoft Internet Explorer hit an all-time high last week. WebSideStory is reporting that IE now accounts for over 86% of all Web browser usage, compared with only 13.9% for all Netscape versions and 0.02% for other browsers. So while the Web browser market might be a two-horse race, one of the contestants can no longer even be considered competition. Netscape´s browser share has fallen steadily since the release of IE 3 in 1996, and Microsoft pulled even with its rival with the release of IE 4 in 1997.

Sales of the Windows 2000 operating system license are expected to exceed 3 million by June 30. The company exceeded its goal of obtaining at least 100 "Certified for Windows" applications while training more than 266,000 IT professionals on the platform to date. The expected summer release of Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) remains on target, and is expected to further drive deployment of the business platform.
