A newly discovered security bug in Microsoft´s Internet Explorer 5.5 browser promises to send the company´s engineers back to work on a product released just this week.
The security hole lets an attacker read files on a target´s computer, according to Georgi Guninski, the Bulgarian bug hunter who demonstrated the bug.
The problem, as described in a Guninski advisory, lies in an ActiveX control that ships with IE 5.5, released this week, and with earlier versions of the browser. ActiveX is Microsoft´s method of letting a Web browser interact with other, more powerful desktop applications. The technology has been the target of security concerns for some time.

Microsoft on Monday will launch its Windows Media Player 7, increasing pressure on rivals such as RealNetworks.
Windows Media Player 7, which came out in a preview, or "beta," release in March, offers a media player that includes new audio CD technology from Adaptec. The player also offers CD burning.
"Our all-in-one media player is designed to make digital music accessible to the everyday consumer, the everyday user and not necessarily the technology-focused consumer or early adopter," said Kevin Unangst, group product manager for Microsoft´s digital media division.

UKGamer.net has posted their views on one of the most popular gold finger devices, the Freespeed Pro. While this card has been on the market for a while now, it still does the job it was built for. Here a snip:
The Freespeed Pro is a well made device, no parts will fall off in your hand, and to the most part the documentation supplied is concise and well written. However there are some flaws in the design of this little card and these brought down the overall view we had on this card. The fact that the user has to set 16 DIP switches makes the task of configuring the Freespeed very tedious and time consuming. The power connector is situated at a very awkward position which gave us a lot of trouble, and only after many different tweaks to bring our power connector duplicator nearer we managed to give power to the Freespeed.Read more

Dennis "Guru-X" Deveaux of PCinsight has finished up posting his views on the Netopia R9100 Router. Here is a clip...
Broadband technologies such as cable and DSL modems are becoming more popular than ever before, due to their high-speed access and always-on connections. While most of the time, it is the home user who uses such technologies, broadband is becoming a viable solution for small businesses as well. While there are several reasons for this, perhaps the greatest one is value. Cable and DSL connections offer substantially higher bandwidth than traditional dial up or ISDN connections (which operate at a maximum of 56kbps and 128kbps respectively). In addition, they cost far less than a dedicated 1.5mbps T1 line.Read more
Microsoft today will pop the cork on its plans to sell software through subscriptions, rather than through licenses as it does now, as well as how it expects to recruit service providers to its new strategy.
In the first in a series of Windows-related initiatives expected to be introduced over the next two years, Microsoft will unveil details on how it plans to sell software through application service providers (ASPs), software service organizations that host Web sites.
Under the new plan, businesses will not buy copies of Windows or Microsoft Office software with a PC. Instead, they will effectively rent software from ASPs and pay a per-user monthly fee to use the software. The more applications each individual uses, the larger the monthly fee.

ViaHardware has posted a review on the MSI K7T Pro. This is one of the first Socket A motherboards based on the VIA KT133 chipset to hit the market. Here is a snip:
Recently there has been a lot of hype about the possibility of the AMD Duron and T-Bird Athlons having unlocked multipliers. Having a motherboard that would support multiplier changes would mean potentially great over clocking. I am sorry to say the MSI K7T does not have multiplier changes. But with recent news from AMD claiming the multipliers will be locked and reports that motherboards will be shipping without multiplier changes this could become a moot point. Anandtech.com also found that even with manipulation of the motherboard to change the multiplier resulted in only lowing of the multiplier and not raising it.Read more
