Copy all files to a temporary directory and rename the follow files:

V66GLNT.LRC -----> NVOGLNT.DLL

Install the "new" drivers with NV4_DISP.INF

A ferocious winter storm that shut down much of the East Coast last month came at a particularly bad time for Microsoft Program Manager Glenn Pittaway. A member of the Windows 2000 Server Security Group, Pittaway had just arrived in Connecticut and was planning to meet with a major customer the next day. By the time of the scheduled meeting, however, eight inches of new snow had fallen. So when Pittaway arrived for the meeting to find that everyone had actually shown up, he was surprised.

IBM has begun to articulate its Edge of Network (EON) strategy, which joins servers, desktops, and laptops with the next generation of portable, wearable, and multifunction devices that will interoperate with modern PC networks. These EON devicesso-called because they sit at the edge of users´ networksinclude devices that rely heavily on the developing broadband and wireless networking technologies: Internet appliances, Net server appliances, future Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), multifunction phones, and wearable computers. The EON initiative is a logical extension of IBM´s Pervasive Computing strategy from a few years ago.

IBM has introduced a new family of compact PCs, internet access devices and thin clients that it claims will provide users with fast and easy access to the web.

The systems, developed as part of IBM´s Edge of the Network (EoN) initiative, are called Netvista and will go on sale in the second quarter. The aim of the EoN strategy is to produce easy to use internet access devices with compact and modern designs.

Microsoft has told IEAK (IE Access Kit) partners to freeze distribution of builds of IE5, following the discovery of a "serious problem" that stops Win2k users logging on to their machines. The gotcha relates to the installation of the 128-bit security patch for IE 5.0, 5.0a and 5.0b on Win2k as part of an IE5 IEAK package, and is caused by "important security files" in a Win2k installation being overwritten by older ones.

Chemical services company, Dow Chemical, has installed an intranet supplied by Microsoft to support its internal communications.

The company will use Microsoft´s Media product to link 30,000 employees over a network that will also be accessible to suppliers linked to certain areas via the its Web site.

The intranet will feature Microsoft´s Media Player, allowing the company to keep its employees up-to-date with video-based internal announcements.

The software giant will take a 20 percent stake in software maker RealNames and will push for new standards to simplify Web navigation, the company is scheduled to announce today.

RealNames, which substitutes short "keywords" for complicated Internet addresses, or URLs, already offers its service through Microsoft´s Internet Explorer Web browser and MSN Web portal. Microsoft announced the inclusion of RealNames in its Web browser software last year in a series of initiatives to jump-start its stalled MSN Internet effort.

In Windows ME, Microsoft has stripped out software needed to connect to Novell NetWare or Banyan file servers, and the operating system won´t support an interface into Microsoft´s Active Directory. The actions appear to leave enterprise customers on Windows 9X platforms little upgrade choice but to move to Windows 2000.

The first PCs using AMD´s Athlon 1GHz chip are expected to start shipping in the UK this week.
