System builders and distributors around the world are reporting that the AMD Athlon 550MHz processor, which many thought would disappear as the firm ramped up higher clock speeds, is once more for sale.

The processor is being offered in OEM packaging to dealers at a cost of around $169, which makes it, let us say, rather competitive with Intel´s range of Celeron processors.

Microsoft Corp. Thursday tapped into the real estate sector by creating a new firm to quicken the pace and at which homes are bought and sold.

Financial details were not revealed, but Microsoft (MSFT) said it would hold a majority stake in the new venture, with Chase.com, Chase Capital Partners, GMAC-RFC, Norwest Mortgage and Bank of America as equity partners. Also mortgage investor Freddie Mac, which has provided significant technology contributions, has a financial interest in the new company.

But does Microsoft fear BSDI, a.k.a. Berkeley Software Design Inc.? I know Microsoft knows who BSDI is, because it is BSDI´s software that powers Microsoft's HotMail site, despite Microsoft´s best efforts to move it into Windows 2000. But does BSDI keep the "Redmonians" awake at night? Probably not.

Computer Associates (China) Software Co. said it has launched China´s first anti-virus software for Windows 2000.

The company cooperated with China InfoWorld newspaper and Software World Magazine to make available its free software to their readers through the means of InfoCDs and PC Worker compact discs.

Imagine running Windows 2000 natively on the AS/400. Well, it is at least within the realm of possibility, according to an IBM source.

The source said that within recent months Microsoft made a proposal to IBM to port its Windows 2000 operating system to run on the IBM Power-4 PowerPC processor. That next-generation 64-bit chip is slated for release in the AS/400 server late in 2001. The Power-4 will have 170 million transistors, NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) architecture, and three levels of cache. IBM´s management is investigating the proposal and its status is uncertain, the source said.

SBS is the central component of the networking strategy for many small businesses and workgroups (up to 50 computers). The Yahoo.com-hosted forum went live this week. Its aims is to shame HP into making a Windows 2000 driver for the Scanjet 4200. Not much to ask for, is it?

Started by a user in Georgia, the Scanjet 4200 club has collected 129 messages so far from HP punters angry at the company´s tardiness.

AS PART OF a concerted effort to combat America Online, Microsoft is in the early stages of putting together a range of partnerships around a forthcoming broadband initiative.

According to company president and CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft will reinvigorate its MSN efforts, leveraging its compression and streaming media technologies to create a platform for distributing Web content over DSL, cable, and satellite links.
