MS blocks staff dial-in access after ´minor´ hack

According to Microsoft it knew about the hacker´s intrusion almost immediately, it tracked the hacker´s movements through its network, and it shut down all of the accounts used by the hacker last week. So how come it blocked access to its corporate network for all of its employees, globally, over the weekend?

Microsoft Says It Knew of Hackers

A hacker had high-level access to Microsoft Corp.´s computer system for 12 days - not up to five weeks, as the company had first reported - and was monitored the entire time.

While the company says it believes no major corporate secrets were stolen, some security experts believe the 12-day period was plenty of time for a hacker to do damage that may not have been detected yet.

According to the news story on the radio here in the UK this morning, rumours are that the source code for both Whistler and Office 10 were items that were stolen from the hacked network. However, this part is just rumour and is not confirmed.
