MICROSOFT IS tackling the sticky issue of combining the functionality of several devices -- pagers, laptops, cell phones, and PDAs (personal digital assistants) -- into one unit.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaking giant will announce 850-MHz and 866-MHz Pentium III processors for desktops on Monday, according to sources close to the company. The chips follow the recent, accelerated introduction of a Pentium III running at 1GHz. Price cuts are not expected on the rest of the Pentium III processors as yet. Intel last cut Pentium III prices at the end of February.

Intel Corp. has confirmed it uncovered a design problem involving processor packages using the company´s 400MHz Celeron and 400MHz Pentium II mobile chips that effectively made the chips unusable.

The problem was brought to Intel´s attention in late February after buyers of notebooks from Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. began complaining about CPU failures.

Sony may recall all PlayStation 2s shipped so far...to stop the consoles being used to play US DVDs.

A Sony representative said the manufacturer was considering recalling or exchanging the one million PlayStation2´s in use, Bloomberg reports. The Japanese company refused to say how much it would cost to fix the machines already shipped.

SCIENTISTS FROM IBM Research´s laboratories have discovered chemical reactions that could eventually allow computer hard disks and other data-storage systems to store more than 100 times more data than current products, the company said in a statement Friday.

The chemical reaction causes tiny magnetic materials to automatically arrange themselves into well-ordered arrays, and this allows for the large data-storage possibilities, IBM officials said.

Be careful. Tecmar has just issued a warning that its Ditto drives will not work with Windows 2000. According to a statement from the firm, the operating system does not provide drivers for floppy and parallel port drives and there is no intention to support them in the future.
