Microsoft claims it is on track to ship Whistler, the next version of its Windows operating system, next year despite influential analyst opinion that the release date is likely to slip.

The assurance by Jim Ewel, vice president of infrastructure at Microsoft, comes as the copies of the first beta of Whistler are arriving through the letterboxes of key hardware partners and 200,000 software developers. Microsoft wants feedback and to allow hardware and software vendors to ready themselves for Whistler.

Microsoft is to incorporate a "signed application" system in Whistler, the intention being to furnish users with a super-secure mode of operation that just plain stops code executing on the machine. Unsigned code, that is. Speaking about Whistler in London today Microsoft VP for IT infrastructure and hosting Jim Ewel described this as being one of several security modes that can be implemented.

The DirectX 8.0 Software Development Kit can be downloaded from the DirectX Developer Center at http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/.

The latest version of DirectX is also available for free (connect-time charges may apply) download from the DirectX Home User Web page at http://www.microsoft.com/directx/. Both the DirectX 8.0 SDK and DirectX 8.0 Runtime are scheduled to be available for download before 12:01 a.m. PST, Saturday, Nov. 11.
