Thanks to Andy for sending the follow email from Microsoft UK to me:
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft:registered: U.K. Beta Programme regarding Microsoft:registered: Preview Programme:registered: software.

At the moment, we currently anticipate that fulfillment of all pre-orders will began shipping early August. Windows:registered: XP Professional RC 1, it will be delivered by The Royal Mail. We are unable to supply an exact delivery date, suffice to say that we will be processing all orders as quickly as possible following date order criteria.

However, this issue regarding shipment times has been flagged on several occasions to the Preview Product Managers involved. Based on customer feedback already received, this is now currently under investigation.

No payment will be taken from your credit card until the Beta software is shipped. It is a standard practice that for all pre-release software available through the Microsoft:registered: Preview Programme, there is a small handling charge per item (costs cover postage & packaging for first copy only).

Whilst a participant in the Preview Programme you would automatically be sent a resourse CD. Windows XP RC2 however will not be shipping in the UK Preview Programme. Instead you'll receive a copy of Windows XP Professional 120 Day Evaluation Version. No release date for the Eval as yet, but when we receive claraifcation we will contact you.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

David Treanor

Microsoft's decision to give PC makers more freedom in customizing Windows XP may give profit-starved computer manufacturers an unexpected windfall: cash bonuses from software makers, Internet service providers and other companies eager to gain a spot on the operating system's desktop and Start menu.

Several PC makers report fierce negotiations with a variety of software companies and service providers for valuable Windows XP real estate, but none yet reports reaching a final agreement. An unplanned cash boon from prime placement of icons could bolster manufacturers' bottom lines as PC sales hover at record lows.

Corporate behemoths Microsoft and Eastman Kodak exchanged harsh words Tuesday over the digital photography features that are built into Windows XP, the forthcoming upgrade to Microsoft's ubiquitous operating system.

The showdown took place at an event in New York City where Microsoft and 20 companies extolled the features in Windows XP for loading, manipulating, storing and printing digital photos. Kodak, however, sought to grab the spotlight and divert it to some features of XP that it claims limit consumer choice.

One of the main benefits of Windows XP for consumers is it's stability. Microsoft's latest consumer operating system in production, Windows ME, is based on rickety Windows 98 code, where Windows XP is based on the far more stable Windows 2000. That's a big deal for consumers, but businesses have been able to use Windows 2000 for almost two years.

The company on Saturday will issue Windows XP Release Candidate 2--the expected final testing version--Microsoft Group Vice President Jim Allchin said Friday during a media conference call.

But as Microsoft puts the finishing touches on the new version of the Windows operating system, the company faces a growing controversy over the new software. Rather than generating the excitement of the Windows 95 launch, where hordes of people lined up outside computer stores for early copies, Windows XP is the focus of competitive and government forces seeking to delay the new operating system's release.
