Consumers are just getting their first look at Windows XP, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from preparing the first major update of the new operating system.
Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said that starting Oct. 25, Microsoft plans to make available an upgrade to Windows Messenger, the communications console delivering instant messaging, videoconferencing and Internet phone calling, among other features. Windows XP is already available on PCs, but the boxed version comes out Oct. 25.

South Korea's largest Internet portal, Daum Communications, said Thursday it was seeking a court injunction to block the sale of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system in Korea.

As part of the launch activities, Microsoft and its Rapid Development Partners will showcase the first group of devices based on the new operating system. Hoping to boost interest in its Windows XP operating system, software giant Microsoft said Wednesday it will offer an add-on package of programs providing digital media features and video games.
The bundle of software, called Plus for Windows XP, will sell for about $40 and will hit shelves Oct. 25, the retail launch date for the XP operating system, Microsoft product manager Geordie Wilson said.

Gaming within Windows XP is stepped up as well. The OS comes preloaded with DX8. Most Win2k drivers for video/sound cards will work, using a Win2k Compatibility mode under WinXP if necessary. However most manufacturers are, or already have created WinXP specific drivers. Such as nVidia, with the new Detonator XP (4) drivers for the GeForce family.Read more
