AMD prepares another round of lay-offs

We have already mentioned that weaker than expected APU sales and AMD's Q2 sales warning have created a huge drop in share value for the company.
Our well informed industry sources confirmed that AMD will have another round of layoffs that will be announced very soon. We don’t have many more details what sort of jobs might be in jeopardy, but marketing and sales might be effected, as well as some less profitable parts of company. We don’t want to speculate about positions and numbers, so we will have to wait and see.

Asrock Beebox N3000 Review: Low-budget mini PC

The Asrock Beebox N3000 measures 0.6L and boasts a mere 4 watt TDP. This incredibly low power rating has allowed Asrock to create a tiny HTPC that is completely fanless draws less than 10 watts under typical usage. The company is heavily promoting the fact that its latest mini PC can support triple-monitors using three video outputs simultaneously, including 4K video thanks to its unique dual-channel memory, a feature other Braswell mini PCs don't support.

ASUS Sabertooth X99 Review

Good looks are just one part of the equation, since this board is built with a plethora of military spec hardware that ensures the Sabertooth X99 is going to be around long term. To make sure you make it well past the five-year warranty, ASUS does some serious burn-in testing and compatibility checks. Using 1000+ devices over 7000 hours, you get incredible hardware compatibility checks to make sure that everything works. From a performance perspective, if you run the same hardware and factory defaults in the BIOS you are going to see similar performance results across the board when comparing the Sabertooth X99 to any other X99 motherboard. That is really an expectation, but it's the overclocking performance and reliability aspect of this board that sets it apart from the masses.

ASUS STRIX Gaming GTX 980 Ti DirectCU 3 Review

Today we look at one of the most exciting graphics cards to hit our labs this year – the new Asus STRIX Gaming GTX 980 Ti featuring the latest Direct CU 3 cooling system. This 3 fan cooling system uses a new patented wing blade fan to provide greater air pressure, and cooling capabilities. The DCIII cooler is equipped with two beefy 10mm direct touch copper heatpipes. Interestingly, the Asus GTX980 Ti Strix solution is built with a total automated production process and incorporates a 14 phase (12+2) Super Alloy Power II power system for maximum reliability. With the highest ‘out of the box’ overclock speeds to grace our labs yet, is this the high end GPU you should be shortlisting for a new system build this summer?

be quiet! Dark Rock TF Low Profile CPU Cooler Review

Size and performance are always a struggle when it comes to cooling, as is noise. It’s a relatively simple thing; larger surface areas are naturally more efficient at dissipating heat, and more efficiency means less need for airflow and the associated noise. However, we are in a wave of smaller form factor popularity that even enthusiast users are going to. While a Noctua NH-D15 may be a top choice for noise/performance these days, it becomes a little difficult to use it when you only have 140mm of clearance in your SFF case. With that we are naturally seeing a rise in the top flow design that had fallen so out of favor the last few years. While a couple of enthusiast grade top flow designs have been on the market for some time, it has been a while since we have seen any real competition. Well, that competition is here in the form of the be quiet! Dark Rock TF.

GTA V performance review take 2: 23 GPUs and mid-range CPUs

We previously published a performance review of Grand Theft Auto V, in which we tested the game using 23 graphics cards, ranging from an entry-level Radeon R7 240 to an ultra high-end GeForce GTX Titan X. We ran the tests on our standard test system for graphics cards that is based on an Intel Core i7-5960X, which of course is the fastest desktop processor out there. However, many readers asked us if we could also test how well more conventional (and affordable) processors hold up.

Intel Core i7-5775C Broadwell Processor Review

Intel’s Broadwell launch has been quite interesting to say the least. If you can remember when we first heard of Broadwell its was rumored that it would not be a socketed processor, but rather it would come in the BGA package. On top of this rumor the actual launch of Broadwell was supposed to happen last year at the same time as the 9 Series chipset. Intel decided to delay the launch of its Broadwell processors till they were officially announced at Computex last month, luckily we did get socketed processors! Broadwell will be the “tick” in Intel’s “tick-tock” release schedule which we have seen for many years now where a “tick” is a node shrink of a previous microarchitecture and a “tock” is a new microarchitecture. The previous microarchitecture was Haswell at 22nm at now Broadwell will be 14nm. On top of just the node shrink Intel has really tried to focus on power efficiency, meaning that they are looking shooting for better performance using less power. Intel has also added their Iris Pro 6200 integrated graphics on the chip, which is a first for a socketed processor. On top of that the processor is fully unlocked and features 128 MB of eDRAM for the Iris Pro Graphics, which can also be overclocked. Broadwell comes at a very weird time for consumers as well. We have heard that Intel could be launching their Skylake processors and 100 Series chipset at Gamescom in August. Skylake will be the “tock” in Intel’s release schedule. So consumers could get Broadwell with a 9 Series motherboard or just wait a little bit for a Skylake processor with a 100 Series board. Having just a few months between launches does not give a lot of time for Intel to really push Broadwell or even get it out into the channel. As of writing this it is quite hard to find Broadwell Desktop processors at major online retailers. Today we will be taking a look at the flagship processor in the Broadwell desktop processor line, the i7-5775C. This quad-core processor has a base CPU frequency of 3.3 GHz with a turbo boost up to 3.7 GHz. While this might be slower than the 4770K it achieves this with far less power and has much more powerful integrated graphics.

Intel Kaby Lake to be Skylake successor next year says report

Intel inserts another 14nm processor in roadmap as it delays 10nm Cannon Lake. By all accounts Intel's Skylake processors are almost here. Reports indicate an August launch for the enthusiast desktop Skylake desktop processors; the Intel Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K. The event where these new processors will be launched is said to be Gamescom Cologne which runs from 6th to 9th August. Then there will be a staggered rollout of the rest of the family. However, after that, Intel isn't marching straight to 10nm parts, it isn't getting ready to launch 10nm Cannonlake processors the following year, say reports. Rather it will produce a stopgap 14nm product family called Kaby Lake in 2016.

Kingston HyperX Fury 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 Review (HX426C15FBK4/32), Lets mix it up!

Today we are going to mix it up a bit while testing a Kingston HyperX Fury 32GB 2666 MHz. We are going to attempt to mate it to a kit of HyperX Fury 32 GB 2400 MHz and run both kits in the same machine at a mutually agreeable speed and timings. On top of that we are going to fully test the HyperX Fury 32 GB 2666 MHz kit, overclock it until it screams then when all is said and done mate it up with a kit of Fury 2400 MHz.

Intel’s 2011v3 HEDP (high-end desktop platform) has brought out an entirely new Ram creature, Quad channel DDR4 that overclocks better than previous ram generations and gives better bandwidth.

Lenovo LaVie Z And LaVie Z 360 Reviews: Taking Thin And Light To A Whole New Level

The wealth of ultra-portable laptops continues to grow, and we're seeing a more varied array of options than ever before. Be it 2-in-1s like Asus' T300 Chi or a tablet-gone-laptop like Microsoft's Surface 3, those in the market for a mobile computer have plenty of options these days. As manufacturers seek out their own differentiation, we're seeing Lenovo carve out its own special space in the sector with their new LaVie Z series of ultralight notebooks.

The LaVie Z and LaVie Z 360 are similar machines, hence our doubled-up review here. The innards are identical, and their dimensions are too...

Lulzbot Mini Review

Lulzbot 3D printers are visually distinctive with their black steel metal frames and show of 3D printed parts. The inner workings are all on display and make the printer look like it's been taken from some kind of science lab.Actually that's not too far from the truth as Aleph Objects, the company behind the Lulzbot line of printers, bases much of its products on the work done by the RepRap project, and propagates a very clear message that it works with the Free Software, Libre Innovation, and Open Source Hardware communities. This means that its hardware is accessible and you can update it as you see fit – at least if you have the skill. This also means that the Lulzbot Mini is a refinement of all those open source projects, so while you are buying a commercial 3D printer you are also buying into the 3D community. Speaking of buying, the asking price for this 3D printer is £1620 (it's pitched cheaper at $1350 over in the States, which is equivalent to AU$1815).

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Review

The Lumia 640 XL is an excellent smartphone for those that don't mind the extra size. I've delayed writing this review for a week or so for a very selfish reason. The Lumia 640 XL that I've been testing is a review unit and once this review is complete I have to ship it back. I don't want to give up this smartphone.

Truth told, I've never been a fan of big phones. I've been very vocal about that. There's nothing more comical to me than watching people in public get a phone call only to stick something the size of a cinderblock to their ear. I call them purse phones, because you clearly can't carry these things in a front pocket. Even in my First Look article for the Lumia 640 XL, I bashed the size of this device, comparing it against the HP Stream 7 and the Kindle Voyage. But, that was from my initial impressions after hefting the phone from its packaging like unsheathing a massive medieval sword.

Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 AC3200 Tri-Band WiFi Router Review

This may strike some of you as a bit odd but the first thing i do whenever i go to a hotel, restaurant or cafeteria I’ve never been in the past i always check to see if they have WiFi available and if so what is its strength and range. To my surprise most places feature mediocre WiFi signal strength at best with average overall range so in most cases it's not easy to get access especially if there are many people already logged on. This of course is not a problem we encounter at home or at the office but that doesn't mean people are not always looking for ways to improve both signal strength and range. Lately many manufacturers have focused in bringing consumers the latest 802.11ac standard which they many times marry with the older 802.11n standard to boost available wireless signal strength and in some cases even range. However it was no other than Netgear that first took things a step further with the revolutionary Nighthawk X6 R8000 router which is here with us today.

NETGEAR (NASDAQGM: NTGR) is a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers. For consumers, the company makes high performance, dependable and easy to use home networking, storage and digital media products to connect people with the Internet and their content and devices. For businesses, NETGEAR provides networking, storage and security solutions without the cost and complexity of big IT. The company also supplies top service providers with retail-proven, mobile broadband solutions for their customers on the go. NETGEAR products are built on a variety of proven technologies such as wireless, Ethernet and Powerline, with a focus on reliability and ease-of-use. NETGEAR products are sold in approximately 44,000 retail locations around the globe, and through approximately 37,000 value-added resellers. The company's headquarters are in San Jose, Calif., with additional offices in over 25 countries. NETGEAR is an ENERGY STAR® partner.

As made clear by the model name the main difference between the NightHawk R7000 which we reviewed a while back and the NightHawk X6 R8000 are the 6 high-gain Antennas which effectively allowed the R8000 to be the first tri-band router to ever hit the market. The R8000 manages that by broadcasting the regular 2.4GHz band on one channel (via 256QAM modulation) and two 5GHz bands on two separate channels adding up to a total bandwidth output of 3200Mbps (600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2x1300Mbps on the 5GHz bands). However for the above to happen Netgear needed something powerful under the hood of the NightHawk X6 R8000 and for that they used Broadcom's 5G WiFi XStream five-core system which supports Beamforming technology and allows the broadcast of up to six 802.11ac and three 802.11n streams simultaneously. Other specifications include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 256MB of DRAM, 128MB of flash memory, three offload processors, 4 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports, WAN port, USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port.

What you need to know about Windows Server 2016

While Windows 10 is something of a retreat on Microsoft's part, back to the familiar desktop and Start menu, Windows Server 2016 is a much bolder move. Although you'll be able to treat it as just another version of Windows Server if you want – with a range of improvements in security, virtualisation, networking and storage, suitable for sharing files and running applications like Exchange and SQL Server for businesses small and large – it's also designed to be a very different platform for a new style of applications. As well as the traditional n-tier client-server architecture and the familiar approach of virtual machines, Windows Server 2016 will also support applications built using microservices and containers.Containers and microservicesThat's where Nano Server and Docker support come in.
