Microsoft has released a new preview build for Windows Insiders on the Release Preview Channel running Windows 11 23H2 (build number 22631). The latest update focuses on smoothing out issues based on user feedback and experiences, rather than just security patches. Key changes include improved connectivity over cellular networks, fixed lag in File Explorer, and enhancements to handling compressed files, particularly those with Chinese names. Additionally, enterprise users managing systems via Azure Virtual Desktop will benefit from a bug fix related to group policies controlling recommended content on multi-session Windows 11 machines.

Windows 11 Build 22631.6269 (Release Preview Channel) for 23H2 released

Microsoft just released a new preview build for Windows Insiders on the Release Preview Channel, specifically version 23H2, build number 22631. This latest package isn't focused on security fixes; it's primarily about smoothing things out based on user feedback and experiences.

A big chunk of this package is related to getting your device properly connected over cellular networks. Windows has gotten smarter since its release last year, but occasionally it needs a little tune-up to handle the newest carrier settings correctly. Think of it like updating maps; now you're more likely to get reliable connections without apps halfway downloading just stopping because a setting got outdated.

Another welcome change fixes a long-standing annoyance in File Explorer: that weird lag or freezing where mouse clicks seemed to vanish until you closed and reopened the window. Goodbye to unreliable performance. Hopefully, this change makes working with files feel a bit more normal and less frustrating after reboots.

There's also positive news for those dealing with compressed files, especially tar archives containing Chinese names. Previously, if the file or folder name exceeded the 34-character limit, the extraction process could become tangled, sometimes resulting in complete failure. The update clears that specific hurdle too.

If you manage systems in an enterprise setting, particularly using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), there's something relevant here as well. A bug had messed with how certain group policies worked for hiding recommended content on multi-session Windows 11 machines; even if the policy was set via Group Policy or CSP, it wouldn't show its effects properly. Now administrators can reliably configure these settings, and recommendations won't appear when they shouldn't.

Insiders can grab this new KB5070312 package to start testing these fixes right away in their Release Preview Channel builds.
