Windows 11 Builds 26100.7309 and 26200.7309 (Release Preview Channel) released
Microsoft recently dropped two new builds of Windows 11, namely version numbers 26100.7309 (update KB 5070311) and 26200.7309, aimed squarely at the people testing insider builds, specifically those using the Windows Insiders Program for 24H2 (build 26100) or 25H2 (build 26200). Microsoft's release preview channel is where they test things before releasing them.
One interesting thing about these updates isn't just the new stuff; it's also how slowly some features roll out. This careful pace gives Microsoft time to check everything thoroughly and ensure compatibility across different devices and setups. For instance, if you're using Copilot+ on your PC already, you'll be able to try the Windows Studio Effects feature right away. Think of it as an AI camera assistant that makes your video background look sharper or more professional.
Copilot+ PCs also get some menu improvements now, like a better Click to Do context menu for tasks such as copying files, saving images, and sharing things with others. Plus, the search results menu gives you more options displayed right there in front of you. It's designed to help you quickly find what you need or adjust your settings without extra steps.
There are some enhancements related to how you interact with your system, too. For example, File Explorer has a new hint for its file search box, subtly pointing towards the overall improved Windows Search function, so maybe keep that in mind if you're searching recently. And something called Desktop Spotlight now works on all supported devices, not just Copilot+ ones, letting users access more context menu options directly from their desktop background.
There's also better support for sharing files between apps via Drag Tray (if your PC has it enabled). Now you can share multiple files at once easily and see which apps are the most relevant. You can even send things to a specific folder straight away or toggle Drag Tray on or off in Settings if you prefer not to use it.
Beyond these visible features, Microsoft tackled some underlying performance issues as well. They resolved problems with slow logins for new accounts, addressed memory leaks that could occur with slideshow lock screens playing, and smoothed out stuttering when apps checked monitor modes. There were also adjustments for brightness controls on all-in-one PCs (like Surface Studio or HoloLens 2) and ensuring games don't get confused about graphics cards.
For the Windows Insiders themselves, this update includes some quality-of-life fixes targeted at stability. Microsoft's patching fix has resolved a Local Security Authority Subsystem Service hiccup that was causing instability. Also resolved was that annoying bug where Settings would randomly close after clicking around certain pages and the issue with search indexers ignoring specific network locations (SMB shares).
