Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.6972 (Dev Channel) released

Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.6972 to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. This new build introduces several changes, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually released for those who have enabled the toggle to receive updates as they become available.

One of the notable features in this build is the ability to manage mobile devices directly from Settings on a Windows PC. By navigating to the "Mobile Devices" section under Bluetooth & Devices, users can view their connected mobile devices, add new ones, and manage features such as using their device as a camera or accessing files in File Explorer.

Additionally, the account control on the Start menu has been enhanced with a new entry point that takes users directly to the benefits page on Microsoft's website. This change aims to make it easier for users to explore and manage the benefits associated with their Microsoft account.

Another significant update is the modification of references to Game Pass plans in Settings to reflect updated branding and benefits. Users can now see the latest information on Game Pass when they access the Settings Home page.

File Explorer has also received improvements, including a consistent dark mode experience in the Folder Options dialog. This change enhances the overall user experience by providing a more cohesive visual design.

The Drag Tray feature has been added to Settings, allowing users to turn it on or off from System->Nearby sharing.

In terms of fixes, several issues have been resolved, including:

  • A problem that could cause File Explorer to display a Catastrophic Error (0x8000FFFF) when extracting large archive files.
  • An issue where an old white toolbar would randomly appear in File Explorer.
  • A recent issue is causing some videos and games to unexpectedly display a red tint.
  • An issue where apps and browsers could have partially stuck onscreen content when other maximized or full-screen apps were updating in the background.
  • A performance improvement when apps query monitors for their full list of supported modes, which should reduce stuttering in high-resolution monitors.

Other fixes include:

  • An issue that could lead to updates failing to install with error 0x800f0983.
  • A hang that could impact Outlook in recent builds.
  • An issue causing Remote Credential Guard scenarios between Windows 11 and Server 2022 (and below) to fail.
  • A problem causing the print preview screen to stop responding in Chromium-based browsers.

However, there are also some known issues associated with this build, including:

  • Text actions that use Phi Silica in Click to Do and Recall will not work correctly. A correction is on the way.
  • The new animations on taskbar previews have been turned off temporarily due to interference with sharing a window from its preview.
  • Some Insiders experience an issue where the Start menu does not open when clicked, but it will open if they press the Windows key.
  • Copy progress might flash when clicking more or fewer details in the dark mode version of the copy dialog.
  • The scrollbar and footer are missing and showing a white block instead when text is scaled in the dark mode version of the copy dialog.
  • Some Insiders are experiencing an issue where using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth is causing their PC to bugcheck. A workaround is provided to resolve this issue.
