Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27959 (Canary Channel) released

Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27959 to Windows Insiders enrolled in the Canary Channel, marking another significant update to the operating system.

One of the most notable additions is a long-awaited feature allowing users to customize the position of hardware indicators on their screen, such as brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktop controls. The new setting permits users to move these indicators from the default bottom position to either the top left or top center of their screen, offering greater flexibility in terms of layout and personalization.

In addition to this enhancement, Microsoft has also introduced a new keyboard shortcut to facilitate easier insertion of En dashes (–) and Em dashes (—) while typing anywhere within Windows. Users can now press WIN + Minus (-) to insert an En dash or WIN + Shift + Minus (-) for an Em dash. It's worth noting that this shortcut will not function when Magnifier is running, in which case it will instead zoom out the magnified area.

Furthermore, the Windows Share window has been updated with a new pinning option, enabling users to quickly access and share their favorite applications.

Microsoft has also made several updates and fixes across various aspects of the operating system. These changes aim to improve the overall user experience, including enhanced visuals for dialogs, such as when an application fails to open, and improved performance when launching cloud files from File Explorer.

In terms of bug fixes, Microsoft has addressed a range of issues affecting users in different areas, including:

  • A problem causing some Insiders with Arm64 PCs to experience increased bugchecks (green screens) due to the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error.
  • Issues related to the File Explorer context menu and the visibility of icons behind packaged appicons in the Open With list when right-clicking a file.
  • Problems affecting icon alignment, text scaling, and mirroring for users with Arabic or Hebrew display languages.
  • An issue causing battery icons to become out of sync with the actual charging state.
  • A problem related to focus when clicking on an app preview thumbnail.

Microsoft has also fixed issues affecting other aspects of the operating system, such as the Start menu, Display and Graphics, Windows Hello, Voice Access, and PIX on Windows. In addition, a bug was identified where the apostrophes in some text within the Windows Security app were not displaying correctly.

Lastly, Microsoft is investigating reports that sleep and shutdown functions may be malfunctioning for some Insiders after the latest Canary builds.
