Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27982 (Canary Channel) released
Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27982, a significant update to its Canary Channel testing program, providing Windows Insiders a glimpse into upcoming features and improvements for the operating system.
At the heart of this new build is an enhanced widgets experience that now seamlessly integrates with the lock screen, transforming what was formerly known as "Weather and more" into a customizable space for users. This revamped section allows Insiders to add, remove, or rearrange various widgets, such as Weather, Watchlist, Sports, and others. Users will also discover suggested widgets on their lock screen, designed to help them explore the available options. To customize these widgets, users can go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
The introduction of multiple dashboards in Widgets has expanded its capabilities, providing more space for Insiders' favorite widgets while keeping them informed with a personalized feed. The new left-side navigation bar makes it easier than ever to switch between different dashboards and views, such as the Discover feed. As with the previous feature, this enhancement is initially being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel to gather feedback before making it available to all users.
Another key improvement is an enhanced sharing experience within Windows. When dragging a local file using either mouse or touch from File Explorer or their desktop, a convenient drag tray appears at the top of the screen, allowing Insiders to quickly drop files into compatible apps or access additional sharing options by clicking "More..." This streamlined process makes sharing files in Windows easier and quicker than ever.
This build has resolved several issues. For instance, Visio no longer freezes when interacting with an input method editor (IME). Additionally, problems related to Arm64 PCs, such as error messages while playing certain games, have been addressed. Furthermore, explorer.exe is now less likely to start crashing repeatedly after prolonged use without a reboot.
However, there are still some known issues associated with this build. Notably, users may experience unexpected scrolling to the top in the new Start menu. Moreover, reports suggest that sleep and shutdown functions might not work correctly for some Insiders following the latest Canary builds, prompting Microsoft's investigation into this matter.
To ensure a smooth development process, Microsoft encourages Insiders to provide feedback through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under relevant categories such as Desktop Environment > Lock screen, Widgets, or Share. By actively engaging with users and gathering their input, Microsoft aims to refine its upcoming features before making them available to all Windows 11 users.
