Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1362 (Canary Channel) released
Microsoft has released Build 28020.1362 to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. It brings along some fresh features and usability tweaks alongside various fixes.
First up is an expansion of the full-screen experience (FSE) across more handheld devices. For those already using FSE with their Xbox app, this update makes it cleaner and more focused than ever, helping you immerse yourself in games without distractions. Under the hood, performance should also see a slight boost as background tasks get minimized for smoother action.
Speaking of usability, there's some good news regarding Copilot+ PCs too. The Click to Do menu has gotten a refresh with a cleaner look while retaining all its power; actions like Copy, Save, Share, and Open are more visible than before. This update also introduces the automatic appearance of this helpful contextual feature when you encounter large images or tables onscreen.
Another practical addition involves Windows Studio Effects being available for use on extra cameras besides the primary one (like those integrated into the system). Now you could potentially get that AI-powered visual polish from a USB webcam or even your laptop's rear-facing camera if you set it up in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras. It’s just another way to personalize your experience.
The update also completes the dark mode shift across File Explorer by defaulting key dialogs (like when copying, moving, or deleting) into this new look, too. This makes for a consistent feel system-wide. Plus, there are improvements sprinkled throughout areas like progress bars and chart views in various applications.
If you're an Insider tester using Windows Search via Copilot+, you'll notice the File Explorer search bar now has placeholder text reminding you of its enhanced capabilities, something that was introduced earlier this year. It's just a small nudge, but helpful context for users exploring the system.
Beyond these feature enhancements and UI updates, Microsoft is tackling several long-standing issues. For instance, if video files with specific EXIF data weren't displaying thumbnails correctly in File Explorer, you might find them showing up properly now. There are also fixes related to settings responsiveness, specifically when trying to get there from sleep mode, and thumbnail display problems that could occur depending on file content.
Addressing performance concerns post-sleep is another key area. Improvements under the hood should help ensure things like getting a smooth internet connection back after resuming, as well as fixing potential stuttering issues on high-res displays or brightness glitches on all-in-one PCs. The infamous "unsupported graphics card detected" game error message when you clearly have a supported GPU has also been squashed.
There are also tweaks to the login and lock screens that delve into system-level details. Performance related to bringing up the taskbar after waking from sleep should be better for Insiders now. This same fix might help with cases where parts of the sign-in screen didn't render correctly during that transition.
Narrator support has been fixed so it won't take unexpected pauses while reading documents continuously, a common annoyance addressed here. There's also some underlying work done to ensure that clicking "Update and shutdown" actually shuts down your PC as promised after installing updates, which is always reassuring. Task Manager behavior regarding closing processes remains consistent thanks to another fix.
Finally, the Paint app is updated in this build (version 11.2511.281). A new feature allows for collapsing its toolbar via a chevron icon; you can hide it if you want more screen space or use built-in commands like Show/Hide toolbar buttons to adjust visibility as needed. There's even an option, "Always show the toolbar," should you prefer the classic layout again.
