Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1495 (Canary Channel) released
Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1495 to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, offering users a chance to experience the latest developments before they become available more broadly.
A neat addition is support for setting your desktop background directly from .webp files, now available through Settings > Personalization > Desktop Background. This capability showed up in recent Canary builds, so it's definitely something people can start trying out right away if they're on that track.
Beyond the new feature, though, this update focuses on getting things smoother and more stable for those testing it out. The shutdown process feels much better handled now after some frustrating moments previously. One specific fix tackles a dialog truncation issue when you try to shut down while other users are still logged in, preventing parts of the warning from disappearing at screen edges.
Input problems also got attention, with Microsoft tackling that annoying black flash sometimes seen using a pen on Snipping Tool's ink canvas. Other fixes include ensuring shutdown doesn't incorrectly trigger restarts for some Insiders and making sure the Windows Update settings page loading actually works without hanging.
There are language-related things in the Clock app Settings too, specifically stuff for Australia (English – Australia), that no longer crash or freeze when downloading new language packs, which is a relief. And good news about smart card reader bugs: those intermittent IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors seem to be cleared up entirely for affected users.
Still, there are some niggles left. The annoying "desktop watermark" showing an incorrect build number persists despite past attempts to fix it. Also, File Explorer windows and tabs can occasionally jump straight to the Desktop or Home area without warning, which is probably not ideal if you're clicking around inside a folder expecting smooth navigation, but Microsoft is aware and working on sorting this out too.
