KB5078127 Outlook fix for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2
Microsoft has just released an out-of-band update called KB5078127. This one covers both the current big release (Windows 11 version 25H2) and the slightly older one (version 24H2), so OS Builds 26200.7628 for 25H2 and 26100.7628 for 24H2 are getting it.
It's a cumulative patch, meaning it includes security fixes from previous updates, notably those released earlier in January related to similar problems, plus one special fix unique to this release itself.
For the most recent information about this update, visit either the Windows Release Health Dashboard or the Update History page dedicated to version 25H2 and version 24H2. Microsoft also has helpful pages explaining different kinds of updates if that terminology gets confusing.
Now, one potential upside (well, maybe not a fanboy moment) is it tackles an issue some users are already experiencing: applications freezing or acting up after installing certain January releases. Specifically, this update seems to help with problems seen on Windows 11 when using cloud storage like OneDrive or Dropbox, especially if Outlook's PST files are stored there.
The problem shows up as specific apps becoming unresponsive or throwing unexpected errors post-update. If you're running into trouble with Outlook freezing after updates from January 13th and the 17th, this might be part of the solution. The issue seems to surface when certain Outlook configurations put its data files onto services like OneDrive. Fixing these freezes requires restarting the application or your whole machine. You'll likely need to restart your device.
There's another known problem some users might face after updating: their password icon could vanish from the lock screen sign-in panel. Even though you can still click a visible placeholder button, this is mainly an annoyance for people using Windows Home or Pro in managed business environments (like those relying on Group Policy). IT pros managing these setups should be aware.
Microsoft suggests tackling that second issue proactively through Known Issue Rollback (KIR) specifically designed for enterprise devices. You can find the relevant policy settings buried deep within Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates on their system. There's guidance available on the linked support article page below if you're rolling this feature back, including details on how to deploy and configure it.
To address the missing password icon issue using KIR, please download the specific policy that corresponds to your Windows 11 version, either 24H2 or 25H2. Installing and configuring this group policy usually requires just one restart of your device to apply the changes.
