Microsoft has released updates for its Windows Terminal application, version 1.23.13503.0 and preview version 1.24.3504.0, which are now available for download on GitHub. The primary release focuses on ironing out bugs reported by users over time, including issues with graphics processing unit or driver troubles and a problem that caused DECRQCRA to be disabled automatically. Additionally, the update improves virtual desktop handling and ensures themes play nicely with tab colors. Meanwhile, the preview version brings similar bug fixes plus new features such as better scroll wheel functionality and improved stability when loading icons and background images from network shares.

Windows Terminal 1.23.13503.0 and Preview 1.24.3504.0 released

Microsoft has just released updates for its Windows Terminal application, both the main version (now v1.23.13503.0) and the Preview channel build (v1.24.3504.0). If you're running either, it might be worth checking if a newer update is available.

The primary release (version 1.23 servicing update) mostly focuses on ironing out bugs reported by users over time. One thing that landed here involves how Terminal deals with graphics processing unit or driver troubles. Before this fix, when those kinds of issues cropped up, the terminal might have just stalled without much help. Currently, the terminal attempts to switch to a simpler, software-based rendering mode first.

There was also an annoying bug related to DECRQCRA, which sometimes got disabled automatically even if users had switched it on themselves. That's now been fixed properly so that preference should stick where you expect.

Other improvements touch things like virtual desktops; Terminal behaves better when creating new windows across different virtual screens now. The developers also updated the settings.json file structure accordingly and made sure themes play nice with tab colors, preventing unwanted overrides. And if you hold Ctrl or Alt over a Terminal window, that quick cursor hiding behavior has been put to rest.

On the localization side, the developers addressed some issues for users in French, Korean, Chinese (simplified), and Japanese, making everything run smoother across these regions.

The preview version update (v1.24) brings similar bug fixes but adds a few new tweaks as well. Among them is better handling of certain scroll wheels; they should now function more fully rather than being stuck on just one-directional scrolling sometimes.

Also, they fixed a problem where Terminal could crash if it tried to load icons, background images, or pixel shaders from network shares (those fancy UNC paths). This prevents potential instability. The "Command Not Found" prompt inside Terminal has been smartened up too, now aiming its search more accurately towards the PowerShell module with that same name.

Minor points include updating details within settings.json and ironing out localization snags elsewhere, just like in the stable version. Finally, there's an update for how the WPF controls integrate, resolving crashes related to other input methods (IME). The conhost component, which is part of what makes Terminal work, won't crash anymore when you run it as SYSTEM inside a window.
