The stock results show that the Formula Maximus Special Edition performs well; and the overclocked results show that it can reach clock speeds fairly close to the maximum of other X38 and P35 boards. The dual PCIe 2.0 16x slots mean that you will not run out of PCIe bandwidth for high end CrossFire setups; frankly, video cards are no where near saturating even a PCIe 1.0 8x link in dual card configurations, so the Maximus leaves you with plenty of headroom. The SATA performance of the board was excellent.

All the HTPC-cases so far have had room for full-size PCI-cards, but that's not the case this time. The slim design has also forced the manufacturer to do some other changes to the normal layout.

Given AMD's public commitment to fixing the TLB errata, and their move to 45nm with the "K10.5" architecture (Barcelona with some additional improvements) I suspect that AMD will be more competitive on the high end sometime next year.

But even until then... looking at the benchmarks, it did not seem like the Phenom 9900 was that far behind - if it was in fact behind at all.

In terms of build quality, the m998 excels with its brushed aluminum finish and steel reinforced structure. Ultra has really put a lot of thought into the case as seen by the removable motherboard tray which includes part of the back panel, allowing you to install your expansion cards without struggling inside a cramped case. The interior is spacious and should satisfy pretty much everyone. One of my favorite features is the ability to attach casters to the bottom; every heavy case should have these!

The back of the card has the 6-pin PCI-e power connector. XFX recommends that you DO NOT use a 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-e cable when powering this component.
