Norton Ghost 9 no longer sees any of my drives

spec: Win XP Home, SP2 ; dual boot with SuSE 9. 2 Pro AMD Duron 1. 6GHz; 512Mb RAM; 80Gb disk with 3 Windows drives. OK - with the exception of the SuSE installation, this has been the setup since I first bought & installed NG9.

spec: Win XP Home, SP2 ; dual boot with SuSE 9.2 Pro
AMD Duron 1.6GHz; 512Mb RAM; 80Gb disk with 3 Windows drives.

OK - with the exception of the SuSE installation, this has been the setup since I first bought & installed NG9.

For the first couple of months, was perfectly happy with NG9 - backing up compressed images of my C and F drives once a week to DVD - no problem.

Then one weekend came to do the usual backup - kicked off the "Drive Backup" wizard from NG9, this brought up the "Drives to Back Up" window as usual - but......no drives were displayed.

It was just after my last successful backup that I installed SuSE and made the PC dual boot, so naturally I have some suspicions here. I did have a less than rewarding e-correspondence with Symantec tech support, have as a result deinstalled NG9, done a clean boot and reinstalled - to no effect.

Spent ages configuring SuSE so I'm very reluctant to deinstall it - which was Symantec's suggested next step. Would be very grateful for any less drastic suggestions to get to the bottom of this.

thanks for any ideas

I have a similar problem with a friends machine. It's a relatively new e-machines unit running Win XP home, SP2. I installed NG9 - part of SystemWorks 2005 Premier. Everything else seems to work - but not NG9. When I run NG9, no error messages, no drives appear ... no backup is possible. Stick a fork in it, it's done

I went to the Symantec web site and read their support policy and realized I was screwed. I searched the FAQ's and saw some comments about conflicts with SpySweeper ... I de-installed SpySweeper and NG9 and then reinstalled NG9 ... no difference. Perhaps this is a conflict with SP2 ... but I don't want to go through the pain of de-installing.

I think we are screwed for now. I have been using various versions of Ghost over the years and I like it ... but it is squirrelly at best. My guess is that there are many more folks with this problem … sure wish Symantec would figure out the problem and provide an update.

Symantec did mess up with Ghost 9, It's pretty much just PQ with some minor changes. In theory this would be great but they've somehow botched things up. Not suprising since Norton/Symantec has gone far down the drain for home users since 9x appeared on the scene and the death of PC Tools.

Can't help with the Ghost 9 issue since I played around with it a bit, hated it, and went back to my Ghost32 v8.2 and Acronis imaging solutions. Hopefully the next revision of Ghost will be something good but somehow I doubt it since Symantec hasn't really done anything good for quite awhile.....unless you count using .NET for Ghost as something "good", ehhhh...

Heard that Acronis is working on a Plugin for Acronis for Windows for BartPE. I worked on my own plugin for a couple of hours this week and was able to get the ability to restore images to HD...still can't backup tho. No big deal since you can backup in Windows. The Acronis BartPE plugin is important since the Acronis Linux CD doesn't allow you to specify third-party drivers (support reasons), so if you try to try to use the Acronis CD on an unsupported chipset you won't be able to backup, with Acronis on BartPE you can add your own drivers which then allows True Image to backup. It took me alot of time but it's worth it...waiting for the official plugin...hopefully it will fix everything or at least give me some clues as to fix mine.

I think the issue is more of a programming problem more than a plugin problem which is why I've pretty much hit a wall.

I have not yet tried to contact Symantec tech support. When I saw the Symantec “fee based” technical support option I kinda knew I was in trouble. My guess is that there must be a few thousand folks out there with the same problem. Norton Ghost 9.0 does not work, it does not see any drives so you cannot do any kind of backup - plain and simple.

I am going to try the e-mail tech support thing. I’m not expecting much, but I feel compelled to try. If I find out anything, I will post a follow up.

Hey!, I just found this support issue on the Symantec web site – “Norton Ghost 9.0 compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2”

“Norton Ghost 9.0 is compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2. However, you need to modify the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) policy and the Boot.ini file to allow Norton Ghost 9.0 to launch its services during startup ...”

So I guess I will try this modification to see if it fixes the problem – I’m not sure when I can get over to my friends house – but I will definitely try it.
