Buffalo TeraStation 5200 Network Video Recorder Review

Surveillance cameras have experienced rapid growth over the last few years as security has turned out to be a very important aspect in both home and business environments. Almost all NAS vendors have either specific NVR (network video recorder) models, or provide apps for recording surveillance footage on their generic NAS models. A couple of years back, we reviewed the LenovoEMC PX2-300D with Milestone Arcus VMS pre-installed on the NAS. Unlike pure NAS vendors, vendors of networking components such as Buffalo Tech can provide a complete package for surveillance based on IP cameras. Today, we will take a look at one of Buffalo Techs solution in this space - the TeraStation 5200 NVR coupled with a BSL-POE-G2105U 5-port Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switch.

EVGA X99 Micro2 Motherboard Launched with USB 3.1 Type-C on mATX

We’ve covered a number of X99 motherboards since the launch of Haswell-E, as well as how USB 3.1 is entering the market through the ASMedia ASM1142 controller or with add-in cards. EVGA is the latest motherboard manufacturer to enter with their solution coming from the ASMedia direction and providing a single Type-C port on a micro-ATX product.

The EVGA X99 Micro2 is an updated version of the X99 Micro, combining that extra Type-C port with more SATA ports, a revised trace layout and a refreshed BIOS over the previous model. The PCIe layout gives x16/x16 or x16/x8/x8 for 40-lane CPUs, allowing another x4 to be used in the PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot between them. The full 10 SATA ports from the chipset are equipped despite the smaller size of the board, although we only get four DDR4 slots which is understandable. These slots are out-of-the-box defined as supporting 16GB modules.

Networking is provided by an Intel I217 network chip, while audio is from an enhanced Realtek ALC1150 codec solution. The two-digit debug display doubles up as a processor temperature display after the POST sequence, and EVGA is heavily promoting its newer BIOS interface as well as in-OS overclocking software.

KeySmart Key Organizer with USB Drive Review

Today we are going to look at a product that you may not exactly associate with geekiness but it definitely has swagger and also includes some technology that most of our readers are familiar with. So what exactly is the KeySmart? It’s a swiss army of key organizers that reduces the ringle and jingle of keys in your pockets, prevents your pockets from getting holes, and also includes additional features like USB thumb drives for us geeks! KeySmart was developed right here in the USA by a guy named Mike Patrick. He funded the project on KickStarter back in 2013 and with 8,900 backers who pledged $329,862 he was able to get KeySmart off the ground and into the pockets of keyringed Americans all over the country. Still to this day, KeySmart is manufactured right here in the United States. We’re going to take a deep look into the KeySmart organizer and find out how well it works, how it looks, and see what the USB drive is made of as well.

Kingston HyperX Cloud II (Pink) Gaming Headset Review

Ask me what my favorite color is, and I would probably say something like blue. I am not entirely sure why, but the color blue is calming and ferocious at the same time. In my wardrobe, my clothing reflects a similar trend, as most of my clothing is white, black, or blue. On the other hand, one of the few colors I have in my wardrobe is pink. I have a single tie which is black and pink, and that is about it. I actually really like that tie, so no complaints here. However, you will rarely ever see me wearing this color. It is not like I dislike the color per sé, but I prefer other colors over pink for clothing in general. As for today's product, the HyperX Cloud II is Kingston's successor to the original HyperX Cloud, which I reviewed back in September 2014. It originally came out in a black and red color scheme, but they released a white and black special edition, which I was able to review. Fast forward to today, and I have the special edition of the Cloud II, except this time in a white and pink. Pink has been a common trend here at APH Networks, as it seems almost everyone on this website has tested a pink product. Most recently it was Jonathan Kwan's hipster Inateck MacBook Pro Sleeve, but we have also seen a USB drive, a USB fan, and a laptop power supply from my fellow editors. Now it is my turn to foray into this shade of red, with the product we have today. However, it is also important to see what Kingston has changed from the original Cloud. Hopefully, this pinkness will not get me distracted from the review at hand. Let us dig in to see what we have today!

Kingston HyperX Savage 240gb SSD Review

With the imminent release of Windows 10 one of the best ways to speed up your PC for the transition is to install an SSD. One such option is the HyperX Savage SSD as it is designed to provide incredibly fast performance with speeds up to 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write along with read/write IOPS up to 100k/89k. With its 7 mm form factor this drive is designed to fit most desktop and notebook configurations.

In the HyperX SSD hierarchy the Savage sits just below the ludicrously fast PCIe based HyperX Predator and above the HyperX Fury. It is the replacement for the now three-year-old HyperX 3K SSD. This makes the Savage the head of the HyperX SATA III factor SSDs.

Unlike previous HyperX models this drive uses a Phison PS3110-S10 controller that replaces the previously used Sandforce controller. For its NANDs the Savage uses Toshiba A19.

Making The Jump To Windows 10, A Migration Guide

The upgrade cycle begins, with Microsoft’s latest operating system--the highly anticipated Windows 10--rolling out over Windows Update for free, for users of 7, 8 and 8.1. For those that are ready to take the plunge over the weekend, there are some things to note. While this guide is by no means exhaustive, there are some useful reminders here as well as some potential pitfalls that may rear their ugly head during the upgrade process.

So far, Microsoft has been rolling out the upgrade in waves and stages. If you are not one of the ‘lucky’ ones to be in the first wave, you can take matters into your own hands and begin the upgrade process manually. While the process is mostly simple, it won’t be for everyone...
