A couple of years ago, if you wanted to have a quiet PC, then you had to sacrifice cooling performance significantly. Overclockers loved high speed fans, as they pushed more air and kept things cooler allowing them to overclock even higher. 60mm 7000rpm fans were not uncommon, and soon there were 80mm and even 120mm versions pushing massive amounts of air and creating equally as much noise. They're also quite useful for dicing salads. But now it's not so cool to have a noisy PC, and most users are trying to find ways of keeping noise levels acceptable while maintaining that huge 1GHz+ overclock. Step in Zalman...
