This is a discussion about A good dual PIII mobo ... in the Windows Hardware category; Hey, you, multiproc frek, what advice could U give me to buy a dual-Slot1 card : brand, model,. . . ? I wanna buy a dual PIII500E, and overclock them so if the board is a good at it, it would be better.

I wanna buy a dual PIII500E, and overclock them so if the board is a good at it, it would be better.
A friend of mine has a A-Trend 6280 : works fine but CPU positions prevent full efficient air cooling.

I forgot : between 200 and 300 $.
I don't want SCSI, LAN, sound, video : already have that.

Then just get an ASUS board. They are good, fast and reliable. Duel model is: Asus P2B-D 440BX 4PCI/2ISA/1AGP/4DIMM, Slot One, ATX, dual processor support. If you are planning to get Duel celerons then BP6 is not a bad board and it suppose to support duel compermines when the adapter becomes availale.

OP
I don't want a Celeron, I wanna have a FULL dual card, witht no underCPU. I mean that when I use my computer at 100%, it's not a little girl job so I wanna have dual PIII.
Asus is good but the trouble is that it's only 4 PCI and I don't need ISA. The A-Trend is better with 6 PCI, no ISA. And the Asus is a little bit old (not overcloking function via BIOS setup).

I have had total reliability and excellent performance with the KP6-BS dual slot 1 i440BX motherboard from Epox www.epox.com/products/mboard/kp6-bs_1.html
Features include 1x AGP 5x PCI 2x ISA 4x DIMMs with FSB speeds (100,103,112 and 133) controlled in the BIOS - yep, no jumpers!
And as an added bonus its usually cheaper (and in my opinion better) than the ASUS P2B-D motherboard.
My system: Dual Celeron 366 @ 550MHz, Epox KP6-BS dual i440BX mobo, 256Mb PC100 SDRAM, CL GeForce SDR @ 120/183 , Diamond MX300, Intel 10/100 NIC, 13Gb 7200rpm WD IDE hard disk, ADI 17", Windows 2000 (2195).

i would say get the Abit SMP boards, i know they make the BP6 which is a good multiproc board, but it's socket370. i know they make slot 1 dual boards, and i've never heard of people having problems with Abit

If you can afford it and find one, Supermicro are the absolute best dual boards. Asus are second.
I have the KP6-BS, and while it has been solid, the tech support is absolute $hit.
I bought the board last August; the BIOS is dated like May of 99. I enquired about an update to fix some issues I had - they said no, they weren't going to support my revision of the board. I replied back and politely expressed my dismay - haven't heard back for a couple of months.
Thats $250 wasted on a board that they obsoleted within like 6 months of it's introduction. B@stards.

I have the KP6-BS with the 2Mb BIOS chip (the later revision board). Epox do seem to favour releasing BIOS updates for the 2Mb board over the 1Mb version, the latest being 3-Dec-1999.
As far as I know they are only manufacturing the 2Mb bords now, so a new purchase should be safe.

Ok, let's start giving answers ...
1 - SHS
Yeah ! What a box!!!! (dual 600-you got money, don't you ?) but I would buy a 3Com 10/100 Mbps. Before having one, I though it was like any other card. Now, I can't live without.
2 - JimmyK
Personnal use, but, I'm a game freak and I wanna play while on dedicated server so SMP. I'm a gfx freak : making a 12000x9000 pixels images with up to 20 layers with Photoshop every month and rendering broadcast quality 3D movies, made with Lightwave and 3DSMax. I'm a video freak, compiling broadcast quality film very often, and actual, I'm writing a app to mix and broadcast disco animations film in real time through a cluster of machines.
So, I call it personnal use, but ...
(Don't imagine anything : I'm just a 22 years old french student in a french engineer HighSchool (told to be the french best HighSchool ))
3 - MarksmanX
I've already had a look at Tyan mobo. Quite impressive (very HUGE mobo). But I don't know if I can find some in France.
4 - Greggy
Good card, I'll have a look.
5 - Riz
iXBT get a intereting point about ABIT mobo : just have a look. It's about overclocking abilities : PIII500E review. It says that ABIT could have done extremely stable mobo in overclock by increasing latency time, so it decreases performance. The guy want to have a deeper look before giving conclusion.
6 - DarthBobo
Thk U for Ur advice.
7 - Greggy
Thk U for Ur second advice
Awx - now let's go to the question section.

OP
Here is the question section :
Asus brand new mobo P3C-D : have any one heard anything about it ? It looks to be a good card, except it's ai820 and need RDRAM (or SDRAM with adaptor but it's 5-10% slower than 440 BX with SDRAM). So if you have any comment about this card, plez, give it.
About Intel's new slot : FC-PGA. Can I but a dual FC-PGA on a dual socket370 card ?????? And can I crack a PIII500E so it can work in SMP ????

No Awaxx as far as "money gose" Nope I just buy as I go along.
3Com Network card's are waste of money
win NE1000 or even a NE2000 more Compatible across other OS.
As far as Dual FC-PGA NO Unofficial word on that, Official Intel said NO Suport for FC-PGA CPU as not SMP Compatible
Your better off find a BX MotherBoard that Coppermine CPU with E support not EB
B means 133MHz FSB
E means 0.18 Copermine
EB means both
here little something I did in a few newsgroup
-------------------------------------------
Just few bad thing about Intel i810 & i810e & to much buildin bull sh@t suck
suck,
This sh@t got to go "AC97 low-cost audio and MC-97 low-cost modem support"
suck suck.
& there is Intel i820 & i840
is super-expensive RDRAM-memory "$1000 for one 128ram" & plus to much buildin bull sh@t suck suck,
This sh@t got to go "AC97 low-cost audio and MC-97 low-cost modem support"
suck suck.
oh let not forgot about that funky 'hub-architecture'
Just to few bad thing about VIA KX133 AGPx4 dosen't suppprt DMA Mode like
it should
in my book it suck.
This sh@t got to go "AC97 low-cost audio and MC-97 low-cost modem support"
suck suck.
I just wish AMD had done something with the 750 'Irongate' like add only
AGPx4 mode & PC133 & nothing eles
Hell no AMD just had F@@K IT EVEN more by let allowing VIA do it.
or
I just wish Intel had done something with the BX like add only AGPx4 mode &
ATA66 Mode & PC133 & nothing eles
Hell no Intel just had F@@K IT EVEN more.
What they should doing is takeing the north and a south bridge & make it one
chip.
This what I like to see
1 AGP slot
6 PCI slot
4 or 6 USB Port "The new v2.0"
IDE ATA100 "4 IDE Channel useing 1 IRQ"
0 ISA
0 PS/2 Port
0 Floppy
0 COM Port
0 Parallel Port
SMP-support
Hell we may well all go buy self a Compaq or Packard Bell with no good to
upgrade.
Don't sit here & give me this sh@t disable it in the bios carp you & I both
know
sometime it work & sometime not.
You all think Microsoft has a monopoly hehehe

I've read (in iXBT PIII500E Review) that SMP is planned to be for 600 and over.
About the i8x0 chipset, I TOTALY agree with this message (except the language ) and share the same dreams. I think that 440BX is still the best chipset.
I find particulary funny the fact that you can find a "low-cost sound audio" next to RD-RAM on the same card ...
Awx
btw : my nickname is Awax with ONE x. I f@cked up while registering for the first time and wasn't able to log as Awax si I had to register again and choose another nickname.
PS : I think we should start another thread about 3Com cards ....
