False Claims of compatability
This is a discussion about False Claims of compatability in the Windows Hardware category; Pardon my Rant, but this really steams my rice, I have been one of those who been an early bird in running all of the beta's and RC's of Windows 2000 Pro. With this comes a certain amount of responsibility for incompatabilites in hardware and apps, I have no problem with this and understand it fully.

I have been one of those who been an early bird in running all of the beta's and RC's of Windows 2000 Pro. With this comes a certain amount of responsibility for incompatabilites in hardware and apps, I have no problem with this and understand it fully. But when a Manufacturer openly clains in writing on their product that the said product is compatable and works the OS in question and it doesn't, and you call Tech support after plunking down $150.00 for the hardware and they tell you "Oh, they made a mistake".....and on top of that this sihas a review of the product that also calims compatability....Who and Who are we all to believe. The Company in question is 3Com, I have used their products for years and they have always performed well, the Product in question in the 3Com HomeConnect PC Digital Camera USB. The setup program does indeed recognize the OS and does check for USB controller comaptability, loads the drivers without problem, but when the system reboots and PnP finds and begins to install the device WHAMO BSD STOP error reboot uninstall...Tech support reconfirms what I suspected, all the drivers for this camera are Win98, even the beta, and are not going to run on Win2000.
SO: 1: How can they claim current compatability.
2. I'd love to hear from the person who submitted this review of the product to this site and tell me how you got it to run.

Install had setup for Win2000 on the driver disk. Went in without a hitch. This is on an Athlon 600 w/ Gigabyte GA-71X MB and AMD North bridge 751 and 756 South bridge."
Consider the fact that RC2 had just been released, which is what I am currently running, and compatabiliy issues for this product had still not been published in the Win2k HCL. I seriuosly doubt that one needs the above mentioned platform to run a simple USB Video Cam if so, the overhead costs on migrating to Win2000 just reached a new high.

Try this - I have a USB Network adapter from the same company. In the .inf from 3com it actually mentions nt5! However it won't install. When I emailed them I got the standard "we don't support beta operating system...". However, practically every other manufacturer of USB Network adapters have beta drivers released. 3Com is an especially bad company for this sort of thing - put them in the same boat with Creative Labs:-(
BTW, if anyone knows how to get the 3Com USB Network adapter working in win2k final, please post <g>.
