Freezes (not random lock-ups)

This is a discussion about Freezes (not random lock-ups) in the Windows Hardware category; I've been having a fair few occasions recently, whereby trying to start a program up - causes the system to freeze. . . . the program (it can vary sometimes) won't start. . . starting task manager doesn't help because i can't see the program to kill it.

I've been having a fair few occasions recently, whereby trying to start a program up - causes the system to freeze....the program (it can vary sometimes) won't start...starting task manager doesn't help because i can't see the program to kill it.

The taskbar becomes untouchable, and after a while the program starts up and normality resumes - nothing in the event log or any other log that I can see - doing my head in

Anyone have any ideas?

Please give us info on what hardware you have and what software you have running in the background. Do you have beta drivers for any hardware? Are you overclocking anything?

OP

Running an Athlon 700, on an Asus K7M Board (although tomorrow I'll be changing to the K7V Board) - 256Mb PC100 Ram, and the 32MB DDR GeForce, SbLive Platinum - all the drivers are proper drivers, cept the beta 5.13 drivers for the GeForce (although it happened before I installed those as well)

Proggies running, er, ICQ, an IRC Server - OE and an IRC Client usually.

I am thinking maybe it would be the ram. I heard that you need good ram with the Athlon. What is the speed of the ram? I know you said PC100. I have 6n and 7n. That is what I would suggest. Did you know that ABIT is coming out with an Athlon board also? Asus is good also but I would recommend Abit. (Please no flames about this)
