Geforce3 driver update problem

This is a discussion about Geforce3 driver update problem in the Windows Hardware category; I installed a fresh copy of WinXP on Saturday. The built-in 12. 40 drivers worked fine but I wanted to install the official 12. 41s. I downloaded and ran the Nvidia installer and rebooted and 12. 41 worked like a champ until I tried to reinstall 12.

I installed a fresh copy of WinXP on Saturday. The built-in 12.40 drivers worked fine but I wanted to install the official 12.41s. I downloaded and ran the Nvidia installer and rebooted and 12.41 worked like a champ until I tried to reinstall 12.41 last night. After I ran the installer again and rebooted, I got a system error at the desktop. When I checked out the current display driver, it had reverted to VGA. I tried numerous times to reinstall 12.41 or update the video driver through control panel to 12.41 or 14.10; nothing worked.

If I remove the Geforce3 from the device manager and reboot, Windows XP reinstalls the 12.40 driver. If I then try to install anything else, the hardware installation wizard claims that "the system cannot install the hardware." "The specified file cannot be found." What file? I have no idea because it doesn't say.

Well, after 4 hours of registry hacking and driver file deleting, I had to resort to an XP reinstall. I did a clean install and the driver update problem was gone.

Not sure what happened here, but I suggest NOT running the NVidia installer on top of an existing driver installation of the same version. If I had it to do over again, I would use the XP driver rollback feature to get back to the original 12.40. Then run the 12.41 installer.
