Hi Everyone,

We have encountered a problem on Windows XP w/s with Windows 2000 server.

We have a Windows 2000 domain with setup of group policy of enable Active Desktop for every workstation (which is Windows XP Pro).

Several days ago, we have changed the policy of active desktop to use the new intranet web page and the workstation is rebooted. For some workstations, the windows XP hangs after entering the user name and password (the active desktop does not appear and I have to use CTRL-ALT-ESC to stop explorer.exe several times) and the white screen of Active Desktop Restore appears. Clicking the button will make the machine hang again.

Can anyone help me on this issue? Because it is very urgent!!

The problem solved. The main reason is the NTUSER.DAT is corrupted.

NTUSER.DAT file is constituted from the registry for the particular user, which contains the following:
- Desktop preferences (including active desktop)
- Printer connections
- Network Drive Mappings

Corruption of this file would cause the excessive load on explorer.exe file and the desktop will not be loaded properly.

The recommended solution is to copy the NTUSER.DAT file from another successfully loaded profile (such as administrator) to the current user profile. As NTUSER.DAT cannot be copied or reloaded for the current user, one should follow the following steps:

1. From C:\Documents and Settings folder, find the administrator folder and locate NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.DAT.LOG files. Copy these two files to a temporary folder, such as C:\temp.

2. Login as administrator. Copy the original user profile (whole folder and sub-folders) to C:\ folder. This is the backup of the current user profile.

3. From C:\Documents and Settings folder, find the current user folder and delete the NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.DAT.LOG files. Copy the NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.DAT.LOG files from C:\temp folder.

4. Logoff the administrator user and re-login using the current user. The desktop should be re-appeared.

5. Re-create the network printers and re-configure the e-mail client.
