Hard Drive advice for NT
This is a discussion about Hard Drive advice for NT in the Windows Hardware category; I need some advice in purchasing a good Hard Drive for NT. My old 6. 5 backup drive is maxing out with only 500 megs remaining and I need a new to replace it quick I just need some advice from anyone who works in NT which drive is really good and reliable in NT environment.

I know Wester Digital is good by recently there was a recall because of a defective chip? I have an Ultra DMA 66 controller and I don't need a SCSI-3 Drive A really fast Ultra DMA 66 drive will do. Thank you very much

I can really recommend the ibm gxp deskstar (7200 rpm Uata 66) family of harddrives!
Got one myself and its very fast got 2 mb cache, and it rock solid in win2k, nt4, even when overclocking!

The IBM is good.....so are the quantum KX's
The new Maxtors are the same as the Other drives mentioned(7200rpm/2mbcache/ata66) and are quite good from what i hear. The only drives that are still slow are the fujitsu's but they are much cheaper

Since I have my own Hard- and Software business I see a lot of harddrives come and go. What I have seen the last 4 years, is that
IBM HDs are OK, cheap, not the fastest, not the most quiet ones but overall quite good. They don´t have too many defects, but some.
Quantum are - excuse me - awful. We don´t sell them any more - too much damages. They may be fast sometimes, but poor quality.
Seagate: Getting better all the time. At the moment the best IDE drives you can get (look for 7200 Drives >20 GB). Fast, very reliable (only 2 defective ones in ~ 6000 pcs within 3 years!! That´s top)
Maxtor: I read a lot of tests, the are alway told to be the best ones. Personally I can´t follow this at all! They are quite loud, not fast at all - though quite stable.
WD: Nearly no experience. We had 4 or five from one series but they didn´t perform too well. But this doesnt mean anything at all!!
Samsung: (yawn)
Fujitsu: EIDE middle fast, very quiet, very few defects.
SCSI loud but super-fast
Of course you can´t tell from one or two or three drives you use by your own but since I see quite a bunch of drives over the years I can tell a little bit more (especially about the defect rate)

Thanks a lot. I am always in the market for new hardware and HDs seem to be getting bigger and cheaper and its always hard to find good companies.
