Harddrive Problems

This is a discussion about Harddrive Problems in the Windows Hardware category; I'm running Win2k final build on a BP6 with a Maxtor Ultra66 drive on my ata66 controler, and an IBM Deskstar 14. 4 7200 on my normal IDE connectors. Everything has been working fine, however, yesterday I rebooted and now my IBM drive is listed as not formatted and its not accessable at all in windows2000.

I'm running Win2k final build on a BP6 with a Maxtor Ultra66 drive on my ata66 controler, and an IBM Deskstar 14.4 7200 on my normal IDE connectors. Everything has been working fine, however, yesterday I rebooted and now my IBM drive is listed as not formatted and its not accessable at all in windows2000. It is if i boot to dos. Both disks have 1 partition each and its fat32. This is the second time its happened. I reinstalled windows cleanly and everything went back to normal. Now it has happened again after about 2 weeks after my last instal. Thanks for any help.

Try running the IBM Drive off of your Ultra 66 controller (I'm assuming it has 2 connectors). Any CD-Rom's, Zips, etc run off of your on board IDE. This is the best way to do it anyway. I'm not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot. I have almost the exact same configuration except my ATA/66 drive is a WD. Works great 4 me.

OP
I've tried it both ways with no luck. About 2 weeks into the intstall, the IBM comes up, unformatted or unsupported in windows. Its fine in DOS and win98 for instance, this is why I'm thinking its a windows2k problem. Thanks for your help though.

Are you overclocking at all? if yes, try setting your HD to work in PIO mode instead of DMA mode in WIn2k, ok it will slow it down, but if it sorts it, then its worth it
