help please im new at linux and im very confused!!!

ok so i have an emachines with a celeron processor and i have windows XP (ugh) i really want to use linux (fedora) or just try it out because i dont want to get rid of all my current files but im confused on how to partition and i cant find any answers i need resources and instructions please!!! thank you

The installer in FC3 should allow you to use the free space from your existing partition to create new Linux partitions.
 
This is something that I personally wouldn't attempt unless I had a backup, even then I don't like 3rd trusting repartitioning utilities on my systems. I start from scratch on all computers I maintain/build.
