There are 2 ways to hide your build number of Windows 2000 from displaying on the desktop:
-Turn on the Active Desktop feature (which reduces system performance) OR
-Play with the regedit!! Open up your registry editor by running regedit, and go to the following registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop and on the right panel, find "PaintDesktopVersion" There, just set the value to "0" ... that's it!
