I've ran into a problem when trying to network the computer win2k with win9x. First, I can access the 98 machine just fine, all the files just fine, etc. Second, when they try to get to mine, they can browse my files and such, but when trying to open something it gives an error "It requires special permission to access" I have created the user account on the win2k with the same name/pass as the one on 98, I have granted share permission to read only for the 98 machine, etc, yet it will never let them open or copy any files, but they can browse the folders just fine. Any ideas?

Yup, do a search on it in this forum. Your question has been answered (and re-answered) numberous times. There are several ways you might consider doing it, and they're all discussed here.

OP
Yes, I have done numerous searches, and read about every topic covered on this board regarding it. All of the topics seems to relate to either the machines not seeing each other, which mine do, or the 98 machine getting the error when trying to browse the win2k machine, which mine doesn't. It is when opening or copying or whatever you would want to do to the actual file where it says there is no permission. The user can get logged on just fine....

Sorry to be so 'snippy' with my reply. I didn't read your question fully. Anyway...

On your Win2K machine, goto the directory or whatever it is you've shared. Right click>Properties>Sharing>Permissions. Check ONLY the Allow Read box. Leave ALL the other boxes unchecked. Your Win98 machine will now be able to open files on the Win2K machine, but won't be allowed to alter them.

If you want something other than that, then play around with the permissions until you get what you want.
