ntoskrnl.exe problem

Hi, I'm using Win2k. I had the problem where I could start up my computer and it just gave me the error message -> Windows could not start due to a corrupted or a missing file <windows root>\System32\Ntoskrnl.

<windows root>\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe . I believe I fixed it, I inserted the Win2k CD in, and then went to the Recovery Console. Then I typed "expand e:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32". So I think it fixed the file. But when it restarted, it freezes when it got to the Windows screen.
I'm not sure what to do, so I've tried formating another harddrive just to be able to get my computer working at least. But after it formats and restarts, it freezes again.
So I'm not sure if they are related or not, but it would be greatly appreciated if somebody could help me fix these problems.
