I having almost the same problem:
If I attach the printer to the W2K box, it installs and sets up just fine; if I attach that same printer to another computer on a network and try to connect to it, I get a browse box that is looking for an *.inf file instead of a box that lets me choose the correct driver. If I try to use the NT4 drivers that came with the printer, W2K will act like it's installing them but then it will give me an error. At first I thought it might just be my specific printer (HP Deskjet 660C), but this same thing happens no matter what printer I try to use (I've tried 4 different printer - all HP's). And I know that there are drivers for my printer in W2K, because when I tried installing the printer locally, it found it. Any ideas?
The printer is installed on a WinNT 4.0 Server. I know how to share a printer, etc, but I'm confused because W2K obviously has an embedded driver for this printer; Why isn't it using this driver when I connect to this printer over a network?

All i can say is that i did this to get my working over the LAN.

1. Install the printer locally on the "server". (win2k pro runing here).

2. From my win9x puter click "network" - access win2k pro box (you need to add your current login info as a user to your win2k box for win2k to accept you as an user, just like you did in nt4).

Anyways click the win2k computer, enter "printer"-folders

3. Right click on "Printer-name" (ex. OKI 4W)

4. Select install...

5. Now it should ask for drivers, and since it's a win9x box your with, you can't really install those drivers that win2k is using, so what you need is to download the latest win9x drivers from your hardware vendor.

6. After you have install your win9x drivers stuff should be up-and-runin!!!

Try that.. If you have questions please post and i'll reply to it once i see it.

If I did it that it would be fine, but the problem I'm having is the other way around: The printer is attached to a NT Server (WinNT 4.0) and I'm trying to connect from a W2K box.
