Quake3 too dark

This is a discussion about Quake3 too dark in the Windows Games category; Hello all, I know this is probably chicken feet but I need your help. I've just installed Win2k to dual=boot with Win98, and Q3 is too dark. I'm currently using a Riva TNT1 with NVDIA's 5. 14 Det drivers.

Hello all,

I know this is probably chicken feet but I need your help. I've just installed Win2k to dual=boot with Win98, and Q3 is too dark.

I'm currently using a Riva TNT1 with NVDIA's 5.14 Det drivers.

I've tried different values of r_gamma which makes no difference and also r_intensity which just makes the lighted areas very bright. The items (I play with cg_simpleitems 1) are faded and greyed.

Right now, my values are r_gamma=1.5 (no diff) and r_intensity=2.5

Any insight into this matter is greatly appreacited.

seta r_ignorehwgamma 1
seta r_gamma 1.2

That's pretty much it. You should adjust the gamma to your liking. I like mine at 1.2

I had to do what MarksmanX wrote. Once I got the 5.13 drivers, I could use the ingame brightness again so I had to reset those same values back to stock.

I never could get it bright enough using the gamma settings in Quake III (or any other 3d game), even using the console commands. If you're using 5.xx NVidia drivers, go to display properties (in control panel), settings, advanced, nvidia tab, additional properties, and crank the gamma up a few notches until the screen looks way too bright but is still readable. Save it and name the setting "3D Game" or something. Also go back to default and save that as a default setting called "Normal". On the "Other Options" tab, have the driver display the "QuickTweak" icon in the tray. Now you can switch settings from the desktop before you play a game. With this, I was able to fine-tune it to where everything looks great in Q3A.

I had the same problem. Finally shut of the gama control in q3a by using the r_ignorchwgamma switch. Screen looks great...

for the best picture with a nvidia card:

r_ignorehwgamma 0
r_mapoverbrightbits 0
r_intesity 1.2
r_gamma 1.5 or 2 (whatever you like)
