Probably a dumb question, but did you open the box and check to be sure the cables are all connected securely?

OP
Of course it's connected, what i meant was my cdrom is working normally after win2k is loaded..just after a few minutes the warning message pops up about me plugging out the device. I'm sure it's connected since i could use it in the first place..only after a while the message comes out and then my cdrom becomes useless. It's as though i plug out the cables while my system is still running except i didn't plug it out.

not quite sure what the joke was????
Sounds like a dodgy cable to me, I had a similar problem and found this to be the cause.
Remember to check both the power and the IDE cable - replace the Ide cable if possible.
It could also be a loose solder connection on either the cd rom or the motherboard - so if after cable checks the problem persists, chech the contacts. Also try swapping the CD drive for a spare if you've got one, this would diagnose whether or not it's the drive at fault.
hope this helps a bit
