Win2K and W98 Networking: Can't see each other?

This is a discussion about Win2K and W98 Networking: Can't see each other? in the Windows Hardware category; I`m running W2K Pro retail on one box and win98SE on another. If I dualboot w/ W98SE, my network between the two was fine. However if I run win2k, and keeping the same settings (TCP/IP), i am unable to see the win98 box on the network (or see the W2K box from the W98 box.

The NICs in both boxes are fine and I can ping each other and even share the Internet connection using TCP/IP, but the damn Windows Networking just doesn't work

I think there was a post the exact same as this a while back. I'm not being rude or anything as I had the same problem, but I've just not bothered to try to fix it as I've not switched on my win98 machine since I installed win2k The last time I installed it that is. Since then, its being working perfectly (miricle). Now I can't remember what the fix was...

Actually I'll go and find it...

(5 mins later)...

Nope that didn't help...I can't even see the other computer (from either w2K or W98) in the Windows network...

The thread you listed (which I read before) was talking about fixing sharing by setting up right accounts...I can't even SEE the other box on the network

Sup buddy, I've had some networking problems before, and I guess I have some experience so far. what you will try is to remove all your protocol and network card from the driver list, both win2k and win98, just set everything back but also include NETBEUI in win98 and 2K. make sure your domain is the same and also make sur you set the file sharing right. Just leave all the config plain and simple and everything should be working !

Why do people always recommend NetBeui. It is a much poorer substitute for TCP/IP and has a greater data corruption rate.

TCP/IP is so simple to set up with setting similar to this and it's so good:

IP Range: 192.168.0.x
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: IP of machine connected to 'net.
DNS: ISP's DNS
Domain or W'group: Anything you like.

And good Lordy, go tell it on the mountain it works. Screw that cheap-arse NetBeui Crap. Only use it if you want to screw your zips and mp3s.

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.

Guys..thanks so much for the advice...felix.. I think you misunderstood the question, the TCP/IP (and Internet sharing) was working fine in my home network, it's just the DAMN MSFT Windows Networking that's doestn't....

I will give a shot at NETBEUI...hopefully that will work..

If anyone else had this experience..please also share w/ us...

Couple of things to check...

If you right click on my network places, choose search for computers, and type the name of the other computer does it find it? If so, you have a configuration or a master browser problem (and I don't mean IE). Check Microsoft's KB.

Assuming you have the ness. components installed (Client for MS, F&P sharing (with something shared!!) and TCP/IP installed) then check the properties for TCP/IP, verify that in the Advanced section, in the WINS tab, you have NetBios over TCP/IP enabled.

If all else fails u can always add each others address to an LMHOSTS file.

And I agree ... NetBeui is Junk.

Sorry to have misled you there or something, but with my PC I can't see the other computers either, yet the internet connection sharing works! So I thought that it may lead to you finding the info you required.

i just fixed a similar prob. 2 comps could ping but network places wouldnt see the other computer (or itself). both were able to access the net throught a 3rd computer running sygate though.

my solution? i changed the ip on my sygate comp to a different range. now my 2 computers are 192.168.0.x and the sygate comp is 192.168.50.x. i did this and now both copmuters see each other in network places and i changed the gateway ip so they could use the net again. viola!

I just fixed the problem last night by installing NETBEUI protocol on my win98 box and W2K box. I also found out that if I installed IPX and enable NetBIOS support for IPX, it also works.

Thanks for all the help guys

I also have a related question: I am using a proxy server to share the Internet among the nodes on the LAN (TCP/IP and NETBEUI). HOwever, the performance of the proxy seems worse running on W2K (I could dual boot the W2K using W98)....any guesses or similar experience. I am running aVirt Gateway by the way.

Thanks again all
