News of the decision prompted a rash of complaints. The company now has reversed itself and will put the software back into the OS.

"Based on feedback from partners and customers, we´ll put it back in," said Shawn Sanford, a product manager at Microsoft. The third beta version of Windows Me, released to testers last week, included support for Novell Netware, he said.

Then the digital signal processor tracks the changes between images and translates them to movements on the screen.

Microsoft is battling a second security problem in Web management software used on hundreds of thousands of Web sites around the world.

As reported on Friday, Microsoft acknowledged that rogue software code containing the phrase "Netscape engineers are weenies!" was included in its Windows NT operating system and could open up Web sites to unauthorized access. The nearly five-year-old code also can be used to crash Web sites running FrontPage 98 server extensions, Microsoft has acknowledged.

Now, in a second security notice posted late Friday, Microsoft warned: "Shortly after publishing the bulletin, we learned of a new, separate vulnerability that significantly increases the threat to users of these products."

For Windows 2000, the exam content has been drastically revised, but this largely reflects the more complex and wide-ranging nature of the product. The more significant changes are in the method of assessment. The multiple choice questions that do little more than test a candidate's ability to recall facts are being replaced by two new techniques designed to measure a candidate's ability to think on the hoof and solve real problems without being able to fall back on basic memory skills. These are adaptive testing and simulation/case study. With adaptive testing, each question depends on the answer to the last so that the level of difficulty can be quickly tailored to the candidate's ability. Simulation and case study testing attempts to measure on-the-job skills rather than rote recall, by presenting candidates with realistic scenarios where some of the newly acquired skills have to be applied.

Every time there are supply problems in the PC industry, and as a salutary reminder of the difference between hardware and software manufacturers, never mind the bubble.com phenomenon, we boot up Caesar III to see a real life simulation of how markets work.

Intel has 70,000 employees working for it worldwide and a large number of fabrication plants, R&D centres, as well as a large headcount of admin, sales and marketing staff. It´s little wonder, therefore, that from time to time things go awry. On Friday, we reported that a large number of manufacturers have been told there will be continuing shortages of Coppermines until June.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-025 discusses a procedure that eliminates a vulnerability in Microsoft:registered: Visual Interdev 1.0, affecting customers who use several web server products. A component of Visual Interdev 1.0 that ships with these products could allow a malicious user to cause an affected web server to crash or, under certain conditions, run code of his choice on the server.

What's the scope of the vulnerability?

This is a buffer overrun vulnerability. Microsoft has verified that a malicious user could use this vulnerability to cause a web server to crash, in a denial of service attack. Microsoft is investigating the possibility that the vulnerability would allow a malicious user to run code of his choice on the server as well. When the results of the investigation are known, we will update the bulletin to provide additional information.

Microsoft recommends that customers using an affected web server product delete the component that contains the vulnerability, Dvwssr.dll. Customers who already did so per the original version of this bulletin do not need to take any further action. If Microsoft's ongoing investigation shows that the vulnerability can be used to run arbitrary code as well, customers who have deleted the file will already be protected and will not need to take any further action.
