I saw you post news about beta BIOSes so here it is another one. It was released yesterday. The new beta BIOS for Abit BE6-II. Basically it is the latest official RV revision but with the new BIOS revision (1.25) for HPT366 DMA66 Controller.

There is also a new Windows 2000 driver for HPT366, ver. 1.25. It is in beta section on Abit´s FTP, but in the official one on the manufacturer´s site.

Research just published suggests that IT managers are worrying about a number of issues that arise when they upgrade to Windows 2000, Microsoft´s [NASDAQ:NSFT] new corporate operating system.

The biggest worry, the report from FastLane Technologies said, is that there will be end-user disruption.

For its research, the directory management software specialist questioned 443 administrators about the challenges they face in deploying Microsoft´s new operating system.

Fujitsu Siemens yesterday rebranded its server products in a bid to establish a global presence. Intel-based products will now carry the Primergy label, while the company´s Unix offerings will be named Primepower. The thinking being that Fujitsu will use the brand in APAC, Amdahl in the US, and Fujitsu Siemens in Europe.

The first three Primergy boxes feature four 550MHz Pentium III Xeons and will offer Cascades PIIIs at 700 and 800MHz ´within the next few weeks´. Cascades will apparently deliver a performance boost of around 20 per cent.

Microsoft´s upcoming consumer operating system features software that helps computers boot faster. Dell´s upcoming Dimension PCs running Windows Me will include this feature, giving customers quicker access to the Internet and other software, the companies said.

Windows Me is expected to be the last Windows 95-based operating systems. After its release, Microsoft plans to switch home and corporate customers to newer versions of Windows 2000.

THE MICROSOFT OFFICE Assistant, the talking paper clip that Microsoft has cited as an example of its software innovation during the government´s antitrust investigation, has been found to include a security hole that allows attackers to take over a user´s computer.

Microsoft has released a patch it says eliminates the vulnerability in Office 2000 and component applications such as Word 2000, Excel 2000, and PowerPoint 2000.

VERITAS SOFTWARE THIS week is expected to extend its storage management features to users of Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers.

The company will announce three new software packages for Windows NT and Windows 2000, which were previously only available for Unix servers. Dubbed Volume Manager for Windows 2000, Volume Manager for Windows NT 4, and File System for Windows NT 4, the software packages allow easier and more precise management, control, and configuration of Windows network resources and files, while increasing the performance and fault-tolerant options for storage administrators.

Microsoft is dedicated to making the latest security technology more widely available.

At Networld+Interop 2000 last week in Las Vegas, Microsoft pledged to expand the security capabilities of the Windows platform. Microsoft also urged technology companies to work together to eliminate the obstacles in the way of adoption of stronger security measures. The company highlighted smart cards and biometrics as technologies that would provide more transparent, secure and manageable security on a mass scale, while eliminating the need for passwords.

In Windows 2000 (Win2K), Microsoft redesigned how NTFS handles access control to files and other objects. You might have noticed that Security Configuration Manager (SCM), which Microsoft released in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4), handles access control like Win2K does. The new NTFS access control model takes a while to get used to, but it adds some important features. The redesign changes access control in three areas. First, permissions are much more granular, which means you can fine-tune user access. Second, if you come from the Novell NetWare world and like NetWare´s dynamic inheritance, the dynamic way Win2K and SCM handle the inheritance of permissions will especially impress you. Third, Microsoft completely revamped the access control dialog boxes.

Chip giant Intel, still reeling from the effect of supplying over a million defective 820 chipsets to its customers, is rallying slightly by dropping prices on its 1GHz processor and a range of other chips no-one can get.

Despite the fact that a previous document sent to its channel partners notified them that boxed microprocessors will not be available until quarter three this year, Intel has told its distributors and dealers to expect a price drop at the end of this month.

Advanced Micro Devices will release its Duron processor in the middle of June and, as promised, is keeping the price low.

The Duron processor, a version of the Athlon chip for consumer PCs, will come out during the week of June 12, according to sources close to AMD. The chip will initially run at 600 MHz, 650 MHz and 700 MHz, while a version running at 750 MHz will follow.
