The patch for Outlook 98 and 2000 totally blocks attachments such as .bat, .exe, .vbs. and 35 other extensions. The patch also won´t let programs access the Outlook Address Book. The ILOVEYOU virus and others used the address book to quickly spread their havoc. Scripting, however, remains activated unless a user manually blocks it.

Intel has released its most powerful processor to date, a new Xeon that takes advantage of technology introduced with earlier, lower-end Pentium III chips.

The new Xeons run at 700 MHz and are built with the cache as part of the chip itself, said Anthony Ambrose, a marketing manager for Intel´s high-end chip group. Earlier Xeons top out at 550 MHz and have a separate and therefore slower cache, the special high-speed memory used to keep the processor fed with data and things to do.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-029 announces the availability of a patch that eliminates a vulnerability in Microsoft:registered: Windows:registered: 95, Windows 98, Windows NT:registered: 4.0 and Windows 2000.

What´s the scope of the vulnerability?

This is a denial of service vulnerability. If a malicious user sent IP fragments with a particular type of malformation, even at a relatively moderate rate, it could prevent an affected machine from performing useful service.

There is no capability through this vulnerability to compromise data or usurp administrative control on an affected machine. The effect of the vulnerability would only last as long as the malformed data was sent; as soon as the attack ceased, the machine would return to normal operation.

Yet some observers say that although Microsoft´s intention is good, the patch leaves much to be desired.

In addition to installing antivirus software and keeping virus definitions up-to-date, there are other measures people can take to reduce the likelihood that their computers will be infected or damaged by NewLove or similar viruses, according to experts.

First, people can delete any email sent with attachments ending in the letters ".vbs," which indicates a file that´s a type of Windows program called a script. Although it´s possible that some companies would send legitimate VBS files, it´s unlikely, said Kevin Haley, a researcher at Symantec´s antivirus research center.

When Microsoft Corporation released the Professional, Server, and Advanced Server editions of Windows 2000 this February, the company promised that its high-end "Unix-killer," DataCenter Server, would ship in June. But recent comments by the company suggest that this date may now be a bit optimistic and that the release of Windows 2000 DataCenter Server will probably slip later into the summer. It´s not a critical problem by any stretch of the imagination, but Microsoft´s continued inability to hit launch dates is beginning to wear on the enterprise customers that have been waiting for new versions of Exchange Server, SQL Server, and other products for quite some time.

A new virus on the loose could make the Love Bug pale by comparison.

Antivirus firms monitoring the new outbreak say only a handful of instances so far have been reported to them. But they caution that the virus has the potential to spread rapidly and cause even more damage than its recent predecessor.
