On an NT based Os? Yes... Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys & taskmgr.exe will come up... minimizing all else, select taskmgr.exe & run the task you wish from its menus! File, New Task... it will let you browse for the app you wish to run!
(It helps if you run your game in the SAME resolution as the desktop alot though, bear that in mind...)

oK I made sure my resolution on deaktop and in the game were the same. I pressed ctrl alt del while i was in quake 3 area just for a quick test. The taskmgr.exe came up but when i went to a different task like www.ntcompatibile.com website, or my email, etc it would not go to it. I would see it try to come up but quake 3 arena i would still see. I am on a nt os yes. I guess it does not work huh ? One thing i hate is sometimes when you do try to get out of a game by ctrl alt del, or the windows key on the keybaord your whole system will freeze because you can get like stuck in the game.

Ok, try these steps after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del keys:
When the first box comes up, press the TaskManager button...
Once taskmgr.exe appears, from its menus choose File, New Task, Run dialog then appears with browse you can choose the task to run.
* It should assume focus as the primary foreground task since you just launched it too... odd it did not if you followed those steps!
(Try it again if you did not proceed in that manner... are you using any mouse-over-app-to-foreground hacks like TweakUI can give you X-Mouse functionality like Unix has in X-11 Window systems where hovering a mouse over an app makes it take the foreground?)
APK
P.S.=> Those freezes you said you had happen should not be happening on an NT based Operating System like NT4/2k/XP... seriously! apk

you alt-tab.
however, some older games are not designed for this and so can lead to crashes when you try to get back.
Some games have an ignore alt-tab built in.
Still, you will find you can multi-task with quite alot of games.

CTRL+ESC works good for me, especially in games that fill the whole screen that you cant see the task bar, and even CTRL+ALT+DEL dont work

Another option for quake3 games is press alt+enter and the game will go into a window mode, leaving you free to switch between chat or other task.
