Used XP Home Edition on EMachines T1862 (Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Card, DirectX 8.1, Logitech Wingman RumblePad). Installed TIE Fighter like normal, did not load 3D Accelerator. Used Program Compatibility Wizard. LEHMAN'S TERMS: click "Start," "Help and Support;" click on "Fixing a problem" on left side near bottom, "Application and software problems" at left near top, then "Getting older programs to run on Windows XP." Scroll down and click on highlight for P.C.W. (I used to try using P.C.W. by right-clicking on on program's exe in the Start menu, which doesn't fully utilize the P.C.W. - but maybe you already know this and I'm just a dummy). Select 2nd option to locate the executable from the CD-ROM, then make make the program compatible for Win98/ME. In settings, select 640x480 screen res and disable visual themes, then click next twice to finish up. Game executable should now recognize that you have a joystick plugged in and run like clockwork. Be sure to save compatibility settings when you're done.

run TIE95.exe
-> Receive "Please check your joystick and make sure it's plugged in" error,

used Microsoft Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit
-> Compatibility Administrator Tool 3.0
-> Win98/ME
-> disable "Emulate Joystick"

there's no music at all, could enjoy the game.

May the Force be with you.

Use Appcompat, enable windows9x and disable Joystick emulation. Runs fine except 3d-Acceleration.

There are actually several versions of this program released. Most of the other users here seem to have the windows 95 version of tie fighter collectors edition. Unfortunately, I have the DOS version which is much harder to get to work. Had issues running this program in dosbox - every time the game went to load it said it couldn't detect VESA. Running the 'minimum' install seems to fix the issue. Also note that Tie Fighter installs a tie.cd file in the root directory of your c drive, so if you're having additional issues it might be worth mounting something as c:\

Tried running this on a 3 ghz Pentium 4, but it's still somewhat too slow. Also, I recommend turning off hyperthreading in the bios if you can, dosbox seems to consume no more than 50% of the cpu otherwise (which makes the game run slower)
