CableModem users: Tried NIC connection vs. USB & diff?

The thing is with some modems that connect thru USB (ADSL is the best example), they use up your CPU cycles, like Soft modems/WINmodems. Whereas if they are internal PCI/ connect through an NIC card they dont use any (NIC cards have onboard processors, like the some of the office connect's).

Hi all, I am a newbie at this and would therefore appreciate help in networking my windows xp desktop with my work nt notebook (i have admin rights). I connected them to a linksys router, but each machine cannot see the other.

There was a cool program that came with Windows 98 CD that removes the dead links in the start menu Sadly I dont have Windows 98 Cd or the CABS and I was wondering if someone could tell me a download location and/or the program's name.

Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro do not work at all(windows xp)

I just bough a computer with the following characteristics, I already have a Microsoft sidewinder force feedback pro (Game port) The joystick doesn’t work at all in the new computer in games such as Microsoft Flith Simulator 2002 Professional Edition , but it is recognized in the game controller / Game options window.

Disappearing CD-Drive

OK, I have a weird one here. I was installing Norton Systemworks on a work computer and right in the middle of it the CD drive disappeared!!!. It poped up with a message saying to put the cd back in the drive.

I was gonna buy the DAVS500 in 2weeks but i came across the DAVS550 But when i try to look this up, google doesnt find much and dont mention it which seems strange. It is £50 more and has Dolby Pro Logic 2 and MP3 playback plus an extra 20watts on the subwoofer power compared to the davs500, i would like some info ...

Security using a DSL modem and router in DMZ mode

Running 2k, a Verizon DSL modem, a Netgear router RT314 in the DMZ mode, and 2 computers without a firewall, what can I do for security other than passwords? I really don't want to run a firewall, the program ICUII needs UDP and TCP/IP port ranging that the 314 can't do and I want to share between both computers.

Terminal Serivces cut n' paste

I found that allows cut n' paste of files within the Terminal Services frame work. It won't install though. Says it can't upgrade certain files. Do I need the resource kit installed in order for this hotfix to work? Or is there a workaround?.

Anyone have any facts relating on how WinXP stacks up against Win2k. I've heard many arguments for both OS's but can't find any constructive or tangible evidence to pursuade me to go with one or the other.

Configuring RAS service ?

A friend asked how to setup the RAS servive on a NT server so that we can access the client NT server through a router (knowing the router's ip, of course!). Could someone tell me how to set up all this ? Thanks !.

Formating / Reinstalling Frequency

With my WindowsXP, I seem to have a bad habit of doing it at least once a month. Need to break that habit, because it is a constant headache. Just curious on how often users format and reinstall their OS's.

Hi there all, I have 'inherited' an olympus d -300l digital camera i am trying to download the pics via photoshop> I have installed the olympus twain s/w the problem appears to be that my laptop ( win2000) does not recognise the camera, after adding the camera thorugh the control panel.

Anyone.....windows update doesn't work.....why???

I can do the Office Updates, so I did them all. But when I try the windows updates, it does nothing and usually stays at 0% done. Maybe 25% done if I'm lucky. What gives? Any alternative windows updates site(s) that work?.

Computer wont restart!

Very frustrating, but for some reason when I go to start and shutdown, and try to restart, or shut down, it doesn't do anything. Just a few apps quit and then it sits there. . . I can continue working and everything.
